    Sands in the fold

With their coaching staff nearly in order, the Raiders have made the first significant move regarding their roster by re-signing defensive tackle Terdell Sands before he became a free agent.

Sands agreed to a four-year contract worth $17 million which includes $4 million in signing bonus money and salaries of $800, $1.2 million, $1.3 million and $4.6 million over the next four seasons.

It also includes roster bonuses of $1.3 million in each of the next three seasons and $800,000 in the last year.

Sands is the biggest (6-foot-7, 335 pounds) and best run defender on a team which struggled against the run. He was considered one of the top interior linemen available in free agency.

Sands, a seventh-round draft pick out of Tennessee-Chattanooga by the Kansas City Chiefs, played two seasons there before joining the Raiders in 2003. He played 16 games in 2006 with a career-high 41 total tackles (30 unassisted) and one sack.

His value, however, lies in tying up interior linemen. Warren Sapp had 10 sacks last season in large part because of the attention accorded Sands.

He was a big waste of a man in GB a few years back.

Random thought: What were his parent's thinking when they named him "Terdell?"
