  • Washington Post: Packers 2nd worst in the league in drafting

According to a Washington Post study, the Packers' picks in the top 3 rds in the past 10 years only averaged 11.44 starts per season, second worst in the league behind only the woeful Lions.

    Least Successful Drafts Overall
Teams Picks avg. games played per season
    Lions 11.25
    Packers 11.44
    Bears 11.75
    Browns 11.83
    Panthers 11.86

If Thompson had made a similar study, he'd realize that he can't depend so much on rookies, and wake up and use the Washington apporch in free agentcy.

What has Washington done in the last 10 years ?

Who was the General Manager for the Packers much of the last 10 years who made those poor draft choices? None other than Mike Sherman!

I am confident that Thompson can and will do a much better job in his draft selections.

Tank, I like you, but your constant moaning about TT is getting tiresome. Like OPF just stated, your hero was responsible for putting us into the second worst drafting spot.

I am surprised ou would even make this post. This leaves Sherm very vulnerable!

This article wouldn't have been a reflection on Thompson. Rather, Mike Sherman. It's not surprising. The last few years of Wolf's era, we had some good, veteran teams that we didn't need that much from the draft. Then, Sherman took over an over the hill team and didn't shitty as GM. It would be interesting to see the last 5-6 years, and see what the Sherman affect had on the team.

This article is non-sense anyways. You don't judge rookies or a draft class after one year, and that's what this does. I guess Thompson beat the hell out of this--since he got 16 starts out of Collins, plus many starts by the likes of Whitticker, Gado, Poppinga, and Manning.
"There's a lot of interest in the draft. It's great. But quite frankly, most of the people that are commenting on it don't know anything about what they are talking about."--Ted Thompson

Gado was a free agent pickup wasn't he? Off someones practice squad, right?

I really do not get the point, if there is one, for this topic. Rather than looking at rounds 1-3, why not the entire draft?

In a 16 game schedule, there are 176 "offensive starts" and 176 "defensive starts" (11 starters x 16 games). For the Packers in 2005:

119 of 176 "offensive starts" were made by Packer draft choices.
89 of 176 "defensive starts" were made by Packer draft choices.

When you consider that Favre and Harris were obtained directly for draft choices, you could just as well consider them the equivalent of draft picks too.

If you go back to 2004 the nominal starters, absent injury, were:

                      On offense:
Packer draft picks- Clifton, Wahle, Flanagan, Rivera, Tauscher, Franks, Driver, Walker, Henderson.
Not draft picks - Green, Favre.

                      On Defense:
Draft Picks - KGB, Hunt, Kampman, Barnett, Diggs, Carroll, Sharper.
Not draft picks - Jackson, Navies, Harris, Roman.

I missed the first 3 rounds part of this. That makes it even more non-sensical.

But the Packers went to the Super Bowl twice in the last 10 years, in '97 & 98, & won the 1st one.
                          Thanks Ted!

Typical Tank drivel... he just wanted to get in the shot about TT not signing a bunch of F/A's
