Texans release former No. 1 pick Carr

    ESPN.com news services

The Houston Texans have released quarterback David Carr a day after acquiring quarterback Matt Schaub in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.

Carr was the first overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft and leaves the Texans as the franchise's all-time leading passer with 13,391 yards and 59 touchdowns in five seasons. Carr had a 22-53 record as a starter for Houston.

Anyone have contract information on his extension from last year? They must be eating allot of salary with this move.

Flat out released, eh? Wow - I'm stunned. I can't believe they didn't at least get a low rounder for him. Zool may be onto something though - if his contract was big, no one would pick it up.

I guess the exact same thing happened to Couch, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. The same things were said about him at the time - he might be good, no one could tell because Cleveland was so bad
Of course, he was damaged goods. No indication Carr is at this point.

Me to, I can't believe they didn't trade him. He's worth at least a 4th IMO. I wouldn't mined getting him......

That is a SHOCK! Wow! You would've thought a 3rd or 4th rd pick for the Carr, even if it has some mileage. It has to be the salary, which is probably in the 6 mil range.

Houston was probably trying to trade him all along. Once Houston traded for Schaub, I'm sure all NFL GMs that might have had an interest in Carr would just sit back and wait for him to be released. Why waste a pick or player(s) on a guy that's going to be released anyway.

To guarantee they can get him.

You talking about Carr, or Moss?

Pretty classy move by Houston to release him now and give him the best possible chance to play the market and select the best situation for him before the draft...

Releasing Carr is the type of move that has some significant draft day implications depending on where he ends up signing.

If he ends up in Oakland, it almost guarantees the Black & Silver draft Johnson. A qb with a big gun and a WR who is big and fast enough to run downfield and catch the aerial assualt.

That moves a QB (Quinn or Russel) down a ways and might mean a player slides more than one would think.

that's exactly why he was released. he and the owner are pretty tight and this was done for carr's benefit.

The saga of David Carr is another tragic example of what happens when a rookie quarterback is designated the starter of a bad NFL team. He invariably performs poorly and his career is short-lived.

Other examples include Tim Couch, Akili Smith, and Joey Harrington who were drafted by lousy teams and expected to lead their teams out of the doldrums as rookies.

While Vince Young had a good year as a rookie, he was drafted by a relatively good team.

Ideally, a rookie quarterback should have 2 years to sit on the bench and absorb the complexities of the game before taking over as a starter.

Tennessee won 3 games the year before and was not winning much when Young was inserted as the starter. I'm not sure I'd call Tennessee a good team; Young was just exceptional.

That being said, I can't think of many NFL Rookie QB's who didn't initially struggle some. Marino comes to mind, but there are not many.
TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER
