IMO, if Okoye is on the board TT has to pick him over lynch. No character question, fits a need (need a starter with Pickett) and has huge upside
I don't think he'll be on the board at 16. I respect your opinion and that seems like a really good pick...but I really think the Pack needs to go offense this year....TE, RB, or WR.
I am firmly convinced that if the first 15 picks work out the way they did in the ESPN mock (they won't) there is zero chance that Thompson takes Lynch at 16. He will either trade out of that spot to someone who wants Okoye and drop a few spots to get Lynch, or he'll just take the BPA (which in that mock was NOT Lynch at 16.)
The guy drafting for the Pack admitted that he drafted for need. Thompson emphatically does not draft for need.
Now, I love Okoye...but he won't be there....but "fits a need"?? 1st down starters are Jenkins DE, Pickett DT, Williams DT, and Kampy DE....and I"m ok with them. it's a prove it year for Williams so I'm expecting him to come through this year. Jolly should improve and be a solid backup, and on 3rd downs, Jenkins goes back inside. Now that isn't a huge amount of depth...but it isn't so much a "need"
"I would love to have a guy that always gets the key hit, a pitcher that always makes his best pitch and a manager that can always make the right decision. The problem is getting him to put down his beer and come out of the stands and do those things." - Danny Murraugh
I think the mocks pick based on need because that's all they have to go by unless they can read the minds of the GM's and their opinions of the players. That's all that matters is the GM's opinion of the players available when they pick.

Most GM's say they draft the best player available...most mocks pick based on need...is the reality somewhere in the middle?
I think they assign players a number grade. Say 95 for example.
Say Brett Favre is a 95, and Walter Jones is a 93. Team x needs a left tackle, but has a good quarterback. In that case, they will have to weigh out whether to pick the better play or the position of need.

If M. Lynch is off the board when we're on the clock.
I don't believe that TT will invest that 16th pick in an offensive player ie WR or TE.
Reason = immediate value and the time it takes for WR's and TE's to develop in the NFL.
Ted Thompson takes the best player available on his board for our 'D' ie a safety or CB otherwise he options to trades down to a team such as Dallas to #22 who covets a talented WR.
Then we have another second or third Rd. pick which is right up Ted Thompson's alley.
