I liked the Blackmon pick. He'll play corner. I had him as 3rd round value. Great all-around athlete. I'm puzzled that they took a return man high in the 4th round--when guys like Demetrius Williams were available. That was a real buzzkill. It's been a pretty solid draft, so far--but we could have had Chad Jackson and Demetrius Williams (or Derek Hagan and Demetrius Williams) instead of Greg Jennings and Cory Rodgers.

How come ESPN's shows us drafting Isaac Sowells in the 4th round?

SUMMARY

Martin is a very interesting prospect because, other than the ideal height, he has all the physical tools to be a good starting quarterback in the NFL. He started his college career at Florida and transferred to Furman, where he became their starting quarterback (and starting punter) and carried their offense on his back. He is going to have to adjust to the huge jump in talent from Furman to the NFL, but will also need to get used to playing in more common NFL offenses where he will have to line up under center which he did not do at Furman very often. He has the quick feet to set-up and get rid of the ball quickly and, when he strides into his throws, he shows the ability to make deep throws with very good zip and accuracy. He is going to need time to make the adjustment to the NFL, but he is the perfect small-school prospect and will eventually develop into a good NFL starter. He will need at least a season or two as a backup, and may be best suited to going to NFL Europe for a season to get re-acquainted with playing in games when he has to lineup under center.

STRONG POINTS

Martin is a very athletic quarterback who has consistently shown the ability to avoid pressure/sacks, buy second chances and make plays on the move (with his arm or legs). He has very good arm strength and, when he strides into throws, he can make all the throws with very good zip and accuracy. He has a quick and compact release to get rid of the ball very quickly which helps him to hit his "Hot" receiver on quick passes vs. the blitz. When he gets out of the pocket, he has shown the ability to throw very accurately on the move when he puts zip on his throws.

WEAKNESSES

Martin produced at a much lower level of football after being unable to win a starting job at Florida, so you have to wonder about his ability to compete in the NFL. He has a tendency to lose focus and tries to rush his passes at times, and it leads to him not striding into passes, throwing flat footed and losing zip and accuracy on medium/deep routes. While he throws very accurate touch pass in the pocket, he is not as accurate on the move when he does not put zip on his throws.

I really like the Ingle Martin Pick. Reminds me of a Ron Wolf selection. Took him in the fifth round, and will trade him in 3 years for a 3rd round if everything works out.

Strengths: Has good size and a strong arm. Is a versatile athlete who also played receiver and kicked in the ’05 season. Has very good speed and mobility. Can throw on the run. Shows maturity with great poise and calmness under center.

Weaknesses: Played at the Division I-AA level, so lack of elite competition could be a concern. Must improve ability to make decisions. Will rely too much on his athleticism and arm.

Bottom line: A transfer from Florida, Martin started four games as a freshman for the Gators before being replaced by Chris Leak. Martin is a potential to be late-Day 2 pick or priority free agent with NFL potential based on his intangibles.

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is a powerful, well-built run stuffer. Is aggressive against the run. Is an explosive tackler who rolls his hips through ball carriers. Is a headhunter in the passing game; can separate receivers from the ball. Has outstanding straight-line speed for his size. Best fits in a cover 2 scheme. Plays with a mean streak.

Weaknesses: Is a liability in coverage. Can't play man-to-man. Has a stiff upper body; cannot open his hips and change directions. Is slow to react to play fakes and gets caught out of position. Never was asked to play man-to-man coverage in college and struggled to do so in Senior Bowl practices. Doesn't read routes well. Must improve his pre-snap recognition skills.

Bottom line: Blue is a powerful, tough prospect, but he can only defend the run. His Senior Bowl performance hurt his draft value. He now might be projected more as a weakside linebacker than a safety. He is a likely third-round selection, but it is unlikely he can contribute right away in any capacity other than special teams.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is big and physical. Can deliver big hits if he can line up the target. Runs fairly well. Diagnoses plays well. Shows poor ball skills. Doesn't take good angles to the ball. Is a little stiff athletically. Has some special teams value. Some scouts say he could move to linebacker.

I'm not big on Martin after seeing him at the combine, but he's intriguing. Has decent size, a big arm, and is a good athlete.

Packers nab quarterback in fifth round

With their first of two picks in the fifth round, the Packers selected Furman QB Ingle Martin.

Martin is 6-foot-2 and 219 pounds. In 14 games last season, he threw for 2,959 yards with 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The pick, No. 148, was acquired Saturday from Atlanta.

The Packers' second pick in the round is No. 165.

Odd thing is they have Tank Williams and Willie Offord which are very similar players...must have been BPA I guess.

Blue ended up falling on draft boards after the season. He was the consensus #16 safety. I had him as late 5th round value.

I had Martin going as a final round flier, so it looks like a reach, but I guess if you are intrigued by the potential of a QB at this point, you take him.

I had Cory Rodgers as 6th round value and Blackmon as 3rd round value. Looks like one reach and one steal there.
