I saw the recaps on both NFL network and ESPN. They talked him up pretty well. The only knock is was his strength against bullrushers. You have to believe they are going to move him inside. Right now on paper, feeling this pick.

They need to address the WR position soon.

OVERVIEW

Boise State quarterbacks must believe in Santa Claus all over again. They will also thank the jolly old man in red for bringing them a very nice present from the North Pole five years ago -- Daryn Colledge. One of the fastest down linemen in college football, Colledge, from North Pole, Alaska, is also one of the more physical pass protectors in the game today.

Colledge earned first-team All-State honors on defense, honorable mention honors on offense and as a punter following his senior season at North Pole High School. He received first-team All-Conference accolades for both offense and defense in 2000. Colledge was also a varsity letterman in baseball as an outfielder, and in track and field. He placed eighth at the state track and field championships in the shot put as a junior.

Colledge redshirted in 2001 at Boise State. He started every game at the demanding left tackle position in 2002, earning freshman All-America third-team honors from The Sporting News. He provided excellent pass protection as a sophomore, picking up second-team All-Western Athletic Conference recognition as the team ranked fifth in the nation with an average of 336.2 yards per game passing.

Colledge spent the off-season prior to the 2004 campaign in the BSU weight room and went on to set school records in the bench press (438 pounds), hang clean (464) and back squat (665). He started every game at left tackle as a junior, earning College Football News All-America accolades.

College was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection in 2005. He started every game and was named the third-best tackle in college football by ESPN. He closed his career with a school record-tying 51 consecutive starts.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a lean, angular frame with decent overall muscle tone, long arms, good bubble, broad shoulders and defined chest...Flashes exceptional quickness for a down lineman, doing a nice job of extending his arms to make reach blocks and seal off edge rushers...Has good initial pop and hand usage...Explosive cut blocker who can get good position on defenders and works hard to sustain blocks...Has loose hips to position and wall off, playing with leverage...Gets out front quickly on traps and pulls, showing easy body movement and the ability to adjust on the move...Stays up and has good foot balance adjusting to linebackers downfield, taking good angles to cut off...Has good hand placement to gain separation and can kick slide fluidly in his pass set...His light feet allow him to slide down the line with ease...Has natural balance, doing a nice job of sinking his hips, sliding out and regrouping efficiently...Does a solid job in attempts to sink, mirror, sustain and adjust when protecting the pocket's blind side...Quick to locate zone coverage when working into the second level and has the foot speed to go long distances when leading on pulls...Knows how to use his long arms to seal and it is very rare to see him overextend because of this...Strong fist fighter who plays until the whistle.

Negatives: Frame has little room for additional growth...Powerful drive blocker, but when his base gets too narrow, defenders are quick to get underneath and push him back into the pocket...Despite his weight room strength, he struggles to maintain position vs. a strong bull rush...His speed is sometimes negated, as he will take a few extra steps coming out of his stance...When he gets too high in his stance, he tends to miss a lot on his arm swipes and also lacks pop on contact when he fails to keep his pads down...Can be much more effective as a pass protector if he anchored better, as his narrow base causes him to get knocked back too much...Slow to redirect when working in-line.

A four-year starter for the Broncos, Colledge has adequate size and bulk, but compensates with quickness and long arms to make reach blocks. He has great timed speed for a down lineman, but it is sometimes negated when he takes extra steps, which causes him to come off the ball a little late. He has good explosiveness and strength at the point to get movement or widen defenders.

Colledge is strong with his punch and gets his hands inside, showing strength with the ability to lock, but is more of a fist fighter than one who relies on placement. He is solid cutting off backside penetration, but seems to struggle when having to redirect inside (see 2004 Louisville game). He does not play with good pad level for his height, but shows good athleticism and quickness on his pulls.

Colledge can find his target in the second level, but needs to be more consistent hitting it square. His angles and speed to the second level are good and he can sustain or mirror on linebackers, but will whiff at times when landing high. He can flip his hips, but must show better consistency when attempting to seal back inside on the counter play.

In pass protection, Colledge's set speed and foot quickness is good but he struggles at times by oversetting and narrowing his base and will have to redirect and power down inside. He plays with good knee bend and has adequate anchor, but his punch can be a little wide and miss at times.

Colledge shows good timing and technique on cut blocks and can see and pick up twists. Colledge is best when he plays on his feet. He is a good athlete in space, and while his base in the running game gets a little narrow, it is correctable. He has a nasty streak to him and has the tools to be an effective left tackle at the next level, but like Houston's Chester Pitts, he will have to rely on his quickness, as he will not be able to grow much more.

Overall: Colledge enrolled at Boise State in January of 2001 and participated in spring drills. He redshirted during the 2001 season before taking over as a fulltime starter at left tackle in 2002. He started all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2002 and all 14 games as a sophomore in 2003. As a junior in 2004, Colledge was named first-team All-WAC while starting every game at left tackle for the Broncos. He started every game at left tackle as a senior in 2005, as well. Colledge is one of the most underrated offensive line prospects in the 2006 draft class. He lacks ideal bulk and lower body strength. He also needs to play with more consistent leverage in order to anchor versus powerful bull rushers in the NFL. However, Colledge is a terrific athlete with explosive power and the mean streak to match. He is one of the best pure pass protectors in the country and he also is a fist-fighting run blocker who great positioning, toughness and upper body power to make up for what he lacks in bulk and lower body strength. Tackles in the NFL, especially on the left side, are the most valued of all linemen and for good reason. A left tackle protects the quarterback's blind side, and is expected to do so many times without help. It's also one reason they're so valuable. Losing a starting LT -- as the Patriots did in 2005 -- can disrupt an offense or force it to be more conservative. One little known tackle from Alaska is drawing plenty of interest from NFL teams. The Patriots can quietly hope he falls to them at 21.


Boise State offensive tackle Daryn Colledge isn't your typical lineman. He is built more like a linebacker but believes that gives him an advantage heading into the NFL as he can block at the point of attack with his strength and still get to the second level effectively with his speed.

They don't come much tougher than Daryn Colledge. He grew up in North Pole, Alaska right outside Fairbanks before heading to Boise State where he played in every game during his collegiate career.

Colledge had scouts scurrying to his side at the Senior Bowl with representatives from the Green Bay Packers, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, San Diego Chargers, Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos among the teams showing the most interest.

Scouts believe he has upside potential and is still raw after not playing much in high school. With an athletic body built for power and speed, Colledge represents many of the characteristics line coaches rave about. Strong at the point of attack and quick on his feet, he was able to use his body to fend off defenders' bull rushes and speed moves.

The Boise State lineman turned in a solid performance in Mobile as a member of the North's team. He handled the South team's outstanding pass rushers, including Elvis Dumervil of Louisville, Mark Anderson of Alabama and Manny Lawson of North Carolina State. Colledge proved why he would be chosen early in April's NFL Draft.

The Patriots aren't exactly looking for a new left tackle in the Draft, but a player with the attributes of Colledge's would make them think twice before passing him by. Having already shown interest in a number of offensive tackles ranked slightly ahead and behind the Alaska native, including Marcus McNeill and Ryan O'Callaghan, it's easy to see how New England could be interested in acquiring his services.

Matt Light is expected to make a full recovery from a broken leg to man the left tackle position in 2006 for the Patriots, but a number of other positions may open up on the right side. Adding Colledge would not only give New England a talented blocker who's athletic enough to pass protect well and drive defenders off the ball, but it might fill some potential holes caused by free agency. Free-agents-to-be, guard Stephen Neal and tackle Tom Ashworth, are yet to be resigned. Both were given one-year tenders last year and it's not yet clear if the team will retain their services.

Underrated OL Visits Dallas

As first reported on TheRanchReport.com Premium Message Board more than 10 days ago, the Dallas Cowboys recently had Boise State offensive lineman Daryn Colledge in for a visit to Valley Ranch.

Colledge, who stands in at over 6-feet-4 inches tall, but weighs only 298 pounds, isn't your typical lineman. He is built more like a linebacker but he believes that gives him an advantage heading into the NFL as he can block at the point of attack with his strength and still get to the second level effectively with his speed.

"I think I'm a rare combination of size and speed on the offensive line," he said in a recent interview with Scout.com. "I think people will be surprised after they see me bury a defensive lineman, then I'm running in the secondary taking on safeties, corners and outside linebackers ... I'll be running those guys down."

As far as his size goes, College says he could easily add more weight, or even lose some if needed.

"It depends on where I end up," he said. "Obviously with my frame I can put on 15 pounds if that's what they want or scale down another five pounds."

Despite his size, they don't come much tougher. College grew up in North Pole, Alaska right outside Fairbanks before heading to Boise State where he played in every game during his collegiate career and was a team captain in each of his last two seasons.

Another impressive stat of this Boise State lineman is the number of consecutive starts he made in college- 52 in all.

"I'm extremely healthy," he said. "I've never had a major injury. I've been blessed. I've taken care of my body as best as I can and I have good nutrition."

Monday Practice Notes: Looked fundamentally very sound. Stopped Kiwanuka dead in his tracks during one pass blocking drill. Patient and intelligent. Used his hands very well.
Tuesday Practice Notes: Problems throughout the day began and ended with his poor hand work. Now he does possess a quick punch, but it is all over the place. It appears he does not quite grasp what his aiming point should be. There were times when he was beat clean because he never landed or was completely wide on his punch. At one point the coaching staff tried to correct the problem by having Colledge use a “flash” punch (meaning he automatically shot the hands off the snap whether he needed to or not).
Wednesday Practice Notes: Continues to show sloppy handwork. He wrestles defenders more than he initiates a proper punch. Saw some action at guard today. Had some problems in pass recognition during a defensive line stunt drill. Titans coaching staff feels Colledge is athletic enough to man one of the wings on the back wedge of the kick off.
Thursday Practice Notes: Possesses quick feet. His hand play improved overall today, but still winds up to much on his initial punch.
Analysis: Entered this week with the potential to really solidify himself as top prospect from a small school. Showed athleticism and quick feet to keep himself in the first day mix but needs tremendous amounts of work with his hand technique at the next level. At times Colledge looked like a pterodactyl winding up to take his punch, more often than not, missing his aiming point.

SUMMARY
Colledge was a very frustrating player to grade. There's no doubt he has the athletic ability to be a very good starting offensive tackle in the NFL, but until he improves his playing strength and greatly improves his blocking technique, he will struggle to carve out an NFL career. Seeing his frame, there's no doubt that with improved technique and work in an NFL weight room that he can improve his playing strength. He will need to learn to bend his knees so that he can block with a good, wide bas,e and will need to do a much better job of using hands to punch a defensive end. He is a tough kid who does not hesitate to play through pain and has shown a real competitive streak at times, but to succeed in the NFL, he will need to block more aggressively and compete hard on every snap. Overall, Colledge is a very good athlete who very well could get drafted, but after a season or two as a backup (either on the active roster or maybe even the practice squad) he should develop into a good starting tackle or guard, depending on what team drafts him. (The recommendation here is to try him at tackle first because tackles with his athleticism are so hard to find.) For teams that really stress athleticism over size -- like Denver and Indianapolis -- he will start earlier in his career and will be productive.

Colledge is a very good athlete with the quick feet to get off the ball and set to block fast. He has the rare ability to get through to the second level in a flash, can deliver a good initial blow to the linebacker, and has the athletic ability to maintain out in space. When he blocks aggressively, he can drive defensive linemen down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks. His quick feet let him get outside the outside-shaded defensive end and can seal-block him inside on outside runs.

WEAKNESSES
Colledge is a "Tweener." He is shorter and lighter than ideal for a tackle, but has the feet and athleticism that are ideal to protect the corner from speed rushers. His size is perfect for a guard, but he blocks up high and lacks the playing strength to handle defensive tackles. He has very bad technique (footwork, blocking position and hand use) and it causes his production to be much worse than his talent level.

He can get through to the second level easily to block linebackers and can pull and lead block on outside runs. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees and block with a wide base, but most of the time he blocks upright with straight legs and lacks leverage. Despite having the foot quickness and agility to change directions very well, he is inconsistently re-directing and changing directions when he pass-blocks upright. Once he makes contact with a linebacker on the second level, his athleticism enables him to stay on the block and maintain well out in space. More than anything, he is a very good athlete who does not play like one, often because of his bad technique and tendency to play upright and bend at the waist to make contact on blocks.

Colledge is a tough player when it comes to playing through injuries, but he does not consistently block with an aggressive or tough attitude. Although he is not consistently aggressive, on the most important plays he has a knack for stepping up his aggressiveness and consistently eliminates his man from the play. He fires off the ball and can really drive his man down the line of scrimmage on down/side blocks. His overall production is good, but it tends to sway between very good and bad because of his very raw technique. He has the foot quickness to slide out and cut off the edge from the speed/edge rusher, but struggles to do so because his footwork is raw and choppy. He also tends to stop his shuffle too soon and just crosses over and ends up chasing his man around the corner. He's no doubt a team player who usually gives an excellent effort, but does not always block aggressively; at times, he will stop blocking before the whistle thinking he has eliminated his man.

GM Jr's sources say Colledge is a smart young man who learns football easily, but one has to wonder because his blocking technique is so raw -- bad footwork, positioning and hand use. He has very good instincts and begins to react quickly, but because he blocks up high and with straight legs, often he struggles to consistently react fast enough. His concentration/focus really tends to waver during games. When it does, his technique gets really sloppy, he tends to stop his feet at contact, and he ends up bending at the waist and leaning and reaching to maintain his blocks.

Colledge is clearly not as big as a tackle should be, but his athleticism is why he might be best suited to stay at tackle in the NFL. He has been a very tough and durable tackle at Boise State, but because of his lack of size and the jump in the level of competition one has to question his ability to stay healthy in the NFL. He naturally is a very explosive athlete, but because he does not fire off the ball consistently, he does not play explosively on every snap. He does show a good burst off the ball through the line of scrimmage to get to the second level to block the linebacker. Considering his lack of size and bad use of hands (he never punches the defensive end, grabs outside the end's shoulders and lets him get into his chest), he can be jolted and knocked backward by bull rushers too easily. Additionally, because he run-blocks up high and without leverage, he usually ends up catching the defensive lineman and struggles to get movement on in-line run blocks.

On Colledge: "Colledge really improved his stock leading up to the draft, and is a quality tackle to develop down the line. Could be a full-time starter in a year. He buried Mathias Kiwanuka a few times in protection drills at the Senior Bowl and got scouts buzzing."

Gil Brandt on Daryn Colledge: "He is a player from North Pole, Alaska; there's not too many players from there. He is a very athletic tackle who was a four-year starter. His speed and athletic ability are good, but he needs more strength."


Daryn Colledge, the Packers' first of two second-round draft picks, said that his hometown of North Pole, Alaska, had a population of about 1,400 and was a rural community. He said most of the residents worked in nearby Fairbanks.

"It's all about Santa Claus and the North Pole scene," said Colledge.

Daryn Colledge said the Packers told him that they'd start him out at tackle, but viewed him as a swing lineman.

The Packers selected offensive lineman Daryn Colledge with the first of their two second-round draft picks. Colledge stands 6-foot-4 1/2, weighs 301 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.05 seconds. He was a four-year starter at left tackle for Boise State, but has been projected as a guard by at least some teams. He's a native of North Pole, Alaska.
