Over the past year-and-a-half, Packers general manager Ted Thompson has made the defensive line a priority, giving big contracts to Aaron Kampman, Cullen Jenkins, and Ryan Pickett. Then he drafted defensive tackle Justin Harrell in the first round in April.
It would seem the forgotten man in this formula is one of Mike Sherman's big-time payouts, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila.
KGB's role will be as a third-down specialist this season, after Jenkins took his starting job late last season.
Criticism aside, Gbaja-Biamila looks at the demotion as an opportunity to go back to his roots when he entered the league eight years ago as a pass rushing specialist.
"They've said everything they can say about me, so now I have that same feel as I did. Now I'm looking forward to it, because whatever I do is going to shock people. I think it's going to be great year for me and for this team," Gbaja-Biamila said.

I look forward to what KGB can do in passing situations. Plus, although not ideal, KGB was a starter for a long time and can fill in if injuries occur on the DE front (heaven forbid). Quality depth is always a good thing.

This is true. RG and I had an argument over this last season, & he was basically right. I felt KGB's salary warranted an off-season cut. Actually, we can pay Kabeer is money (it's high, but What the hell) and get great production out of that position. KGB looked much quicker and faster whn not saddle with playing the first two downs.

As long as nobody outplays him for the job, I say use him. He's hard to pass block.

As you stated - as long as he remains productive, there's no real need to cut him because of his salary, especially with the way the salaries are increasing.

If KGB's sack/pressure stats still suck when only used in limited situations - well, we won't get into that. I'm looking for a 10 plus sack season from KGB.

People have mentioned this from time to time. I do not remember seeing that, and in fact commented to my son in one of the games that the decreased workload hadn't seemed to help him at all.

He had a sack against the Bears, but nothing else in the final four games. He got ridden out on several, just like when he was the starter.

What did I miss?

I'm not expecting any big resurgence from him. I hope I am wrong, but I fear he might be like so many other speed rushers, who have relatively short time spans of productivity.

Has he slowed down with age? There must be some reason for his reduced effectiveness. Wasn't there another hit on him like he couldn't stop the run?

Well, oh Great P-Dog, he looked quicker to me. I thought the LT's weren't simply able to ride him out of the play as readily. Also thought that the offenses were chipping him more than before.

I also saw him vary his rush pattern, actually doing a few spins to the inside. My observations are subjective, they weren't reflected in a great increase in production. I just thought the boy had a lot more zip than he did when he was a 3 down DE.

We'll see if this is true. With his salary, he has to be a big factor on 3rd down, or one of the young DE's will get a chance.

I saw exactly what Patler saw. I thought KGB just looks llike a guy who used to blow by people and now he can't even when rested. I think he'll have a similar year to last year, but this will be it for him. I think he's just about done unless he gets some performance enhancers.

There's only one way to settle this one, OK boys, head down to the Packer Rats theater for extensive film study of KGB!

This stuff is pretty subjective, so a good 'ol film study probably wouldn't settle any argument.
