Birdine made the play, but I think you are underseling Harrell on that play a bit. He drove the OL at least 5 yards back, so he got great push up the middle and put himself in position to make that play. It will be interesting to see how he looks when he's 100%. I know I read one of the writers say that it takes a year to regain full strength after having that injury, so I suspect he'll look better as the year goes on. Hopefully. He seems like he'll be at least a stout plugger in the middle when he's healthy. Not sure about his pass rush abilities. Really hard to judge the guy right now.

Both Jones and Jennings made a couple of plays on the first two series. It's obvious that Jennings is playing Driver's spot in the offense when Driver is out--because he got more looks in two series than he has in the first three games with Driver in there.

      • Harv, did anything noteworthy occur? I can't find a postgame show online (WSSP live won't work for me) and I have no idea who did what tonight.

I realize the starters for only in for a bit. Any back-ups do anything to earn their spot or lose their spot short of Birdine? Did any of the safeties do anything to convince the Pack to ditch Manual?

        • Partial,

I know you didnt ask me, but I'll butt in any way. Here are some things that stood out in the game.

Justin Harrell looked better. Got some nice push and did a REALLY nice job on that TD he scored. Harv is right, Harrell pushed the O linemen back and collapsed the pocket. This was by far his best game.

Peprah may have pushed Manuel out the door. Culver looks like he'll be out for awhile, if not out the door, then on IR. Peprah has a REAL nice pass break-up when he was one on one against a TE. He also had some nice tackles, not too many miss tackles, if any. Manuel is probably gone.

Bishop was not overly impressive tonight. That being said, he still looks like he belongs. Rookie mistakes. I still like him.

Blackmon broke up a TD pass, REAL, REAL nice play. His cast is pretty big, reminded me of Andre Thurman's from a year or two ago. Blackmon did not field a punt or kick.

Bush gave up a couple of completions but nothing major.

The Packers STILL can't run the ball. Wynn flashed at times but looked winded towards the end. He did have 22 carries (or so) and will probably end up on the practice squad.

The Packers cant go into the season without aquiring a true #3 TE. The Alcorn experiment should be over and Harris should be on the PS.

Another RB should be brought it. In my mind, it is a no brainer.

Miree is probably gone. He did not play well and got very few snaps. Hall and White, two rooks, will probably be your FBs. They may try and put White on the PS and sign a different FB after cuts.

It is going to be hard to hide Muir and Birdline on the PS. The Packers should probably put Montgomery on PUP or IR and keep Birdline. Muir may stick if they trade Cole or Williams. The next 48 hours will be very interesting.

Crosby did miss a 52 yarder, but he had plenty of leg. It traveled at least 60 if not more. I still think the rookie gets the job.

The Titans played their 1s vs. our 2s and 3s virtually in entire 3 quarters. Remember, it was 14-14 after the first play of the second half. Not bad. Giving up that punt return really made the score look bad for us, but it really wasnt that impressive of a showing by the Titans.

Brett looked great. What else is new?

          Any other ?s

          • Here's what I remember:

            1) Favre looked sharp. Jennings, Jones, and Bubba all made plays.
            2) The run blocking wasn't good. Pass protection when the starters were in was solid. Not so good with the backups. Really, it's impossible to judge though. Kyle Vanden Bosch, Albert Haynesworth, etc. SHOULD dominate guys like Travis Leffew and Adam Stenavich.
            3) Ryan had some great punts, but had 2 bad ones.
            4) Crosby missed a 52-yard FG.
            5) Clowney started off horribly. Rebounded a bit, but I think he lost a spot.
            6) Bigby showed good speed on a good lick. I hope this guy can cover--because he looks good in support and on blitzes.
            7) Blackmon gave up one and got one.
            8) I thought Frank Walker outplayed Patrick Dendy, and Charlie Peprah outplayed Tyrone Culver.
            9) Our backup LBs are weak.
            10) Daniel Muir flashed again.
            11) As far as Wynn, I thought he got zero blocking early, but had some nice runs when he did get blocking. Actually, I thought he looked better than in the scrimmage or practice (can't remember which I watched of him). He has rock hands though. He's a big guy that has some nifty feet. He's worth keeping around--at least on the PS.
            12) Paul Thompson lost any shot he had of making the roster.
            13) I thought Birdine and Hunter both made some plays, but Birdine lacks stamina.
            14) I watched Harrell on a few plays. While he didn't dominate, he held the point and got some push on some of the plays.
            15) I thought Bishop really struggled. He looks too much like Abdul Hodge to me.

            • So when will this "top ten" defense learn to tackle.

The failure to tackle will cause some players to miss out on a chance to be a benchwarmer.

                • I don't think anyone on the "top ten" starting D missed any tackles. I know it was only preseason but our D looked real good.

Some scrubs missed some tackles but every team goes through that.

                    Harv,

They barely showed it but dont you think Vanden Bosch hit on Brett after the TD pass was WAAAAAYYYY late. In my opinion, it was a cheap hit. Unless, he was blocked into him but I didnt think so. The replay showed Brett threw the ball and was hit WELL after. What the hell! Where was the flag?

I missed it, but that's what superfan told me. He said that Brett got hit while Herron was going into the endzone.

                      • It was bullshit. As big as that SOB is, I was ready to rip his head off when I saw Brett limping off the field. It was cheap.

Always respect your opponent, even when you're kicking the crap outta him.

                          • Hmmm. I think that was Steelers nose tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen. But I can see how you could confuse the two.

Wasn't the play a pass play ? If he was rushing the passer I would not consider that driving the blocker back. Based on TT's comments and the medical staff checking him out throughly pre-draft, I don't think the expectation was for him to showly develop during the season.
TERD Buckley over Troy Vincent, Robert Ferguson over Chris Chambers, Kevn King instead of TJ Watt, and now, RICH GANNON, over JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY LEONARD. Thank you FLOWER

No that was Von Oelhoffen from Pittsburg.
