  • No.79 sold for $10,000

"Number payout: Whitticker, by the way, won't wear jersey No. 79, as he did his rookie year. He sold it to newly acquired free agent defensive tackle Ryan Pickett for a cool $10,000.

"It means that much to me. I've had this number since I was in high school," said Pickett, who played at Zephyrhills (Fla.) High. "He bargained. He started off talking $25,000. I said nooo."

This just illustrates the point that Ryan Pickett like a lot of NFL players can't handle money. $10,000 for a number? Maybe if you're an All-Pro, but really... Good Job, Whit!

Especially since Whitticker might not make the team, and Pickett could grab the number after he got cut.

10,000 is nothing to these guys. If you're making 4 million a year, that is 1/4 of a percentage of your money.

.25% of your money is nothing.

That's donating 250 dollars if you make 100,000 a year.

That's my point, Partial. When you're 26 years old and making $4 million a year, it isn't that much money to you. But after 3 years when you are out of a job in the NFL and have to find "regular" work, $10,000 will be much more significant to you. These guys are making a mistake by not appreciating and saving their money now while they are earning the big bucks.

$10,000 is $10,000. No one should ever get so complacent about that sum of money. Whitticker is supposed to be a smart guy. He proved it here in this instance.

I will sell any of you guys the right to use my soccer #00 for only $1000. That's a good deal, trust me.

That's a very tempting offer (since I know you were a star), but didn't you leave out a decimal point? $10.00 rather than $1000?

What the hell am I supposed to do with my #79 Will Whitticker jersey?

On a side note, Packer Pro Shop has Walker, Flanagan and Longwell replica jerseys for $29.95.

Keep it! Think of the value when Whittacker makes the HOF, and everyone has forgotten that he originally wore #79.

How many remember that Henry Aaron was not always #44? What would you give for a replica Aaron #5????

if you make 4 million a year, 1/4 of your contract would be $1 million....$10,000 is 1/400 of a 4million contract. Just explaining the point even better at how "cheap" $10,000 is to these guys.

I wonder if the guys in the equipment room were having some fun with FA Kenderick Allen, giving him #97.

If, 3 years out, he has to worry about 10g then things really went south.

Pickett was a first rounder and is on his second contract. He pocketed 6 million of that, minus agent fees, etc. He is set for life if he has a decent manager/agent.

You are making a really useless point. Pickett can make 10g any day of the week...card show, endorsement, personal appearances, etc.

Furthermore, this kind of thing is routine, and 10g is a good deal for a number.

TB, your point is ridiculous. Athletes being in financial trouble is also routine as well

$10,000 should be a lot of money to anyone, rich or poor. Yeah, it was a good deal - for Whitticker. Unless Pickett can directly turn the number 79 into $10,000 profit for himself, he made a bad financial move.

                            .

I heard Williams Handersen gave up his #30 number to Ahman Green at no cost. What a class act on Handersen's part.
