According to "Wikipeida": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas_Team
The Cowboys were coined America's Team by NFL Films VP & editor Bob Ryan in 1979 while making the Cowboys 1978 highlight film. Even though the Steelers beat the Cowboys in the Super Bowl for that season.
Art Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers was quoted as saying they didn't want the title of America's Team and that they are a Pittsburgh team.
Many Fans believe New England is America's team because of their three Super Bowl Victories in four seasons. Other fan bases such as New Orleans (after Katrina) and the Green Bay fans (because of their loyal following) also believe their team is America's team.
How ever, the most interesting and indisputable fact that makes Green Bay America's Team (fan base not withstanding) is:
The Green Bay Packers actually ARE owned by shareholder Americans, in all 50 states.
"Once the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the Republic.”
