TiVo is the most overrated DVR. I had one for awhile, and while it was ok, I much prefer my current box which doesn't make annoying noises all the time.
TiVo is simple and user-friendly. Maybe there are DVRs out there that have more features and such, but TiVo's features are good (CNET, Amazon Unbox, etc.) and paying for the "subscription fee" is definitely worth the price.
And the sounds, IMO, are fantastic.

No way. The DVR that we bought is just a cheapo basic one but it gets the job one. Fee free. TiVo would be decent if they offered lifetime subscription for free with the cost of the HDTV box imo. And got rid of all the annoying sounds it makes when pushing buttons on the remote.
Ipod. I'm not into a lot of technology stuff, but the fact that I can carry 2400 songs in my shirt pocket to listen any time I want is pretty cool.
