I found this article very interesting, especially at the end--the part about people being charged with felonies for doing something that the voters in the state approved.

I was part of a restaraunt/co-op back in the day that had a marijuana vending machine. Do you remember those old candy machines that were often found in gas stations, where you pull on a different lever to choose a candy bar? Well, for 35 cents, you got a rolled joint and a wooden stick match. The machine was known cryptically as the "religious stamp machine" among members, and the person (club dealer) was refered to as "God". Whispers of "God refilled the religious stamp machine last night" were heard at dinner. -
