Nine Oregon firefighters were killed in a helicopter crash west of the Redding/Lake Shasta area. They had been fighting forest fires in California. Four others were able to escape the burning copter as it rolled down a hillside.
This news sent chills down the spines of my wife and myself. Our 21 year old nephew from Gresham, OR is also an Oregon firefighter on a crew down in California. He is a college student from the U. of Portland working there for the summer.
Needless to say, it is a very dangerous occupation.
