Time to legalize drugs once and for all

If this man had been allowed to inject cocaine into his arm in a safe hospital environment, this disaster would never have happened.

Police say a man tried to cut off his own arm at a restaurant in Modesto, Calif., because he thought he had injected air into a vein while shooting cocaine and feared he would die unless he took drastic action.

Authorities say 33-year-old Michael Lasiter rushed into the Denny's restaurant late Friday and started stabbing himself in one arm with a butter knife he grabbed from a table.

They say that when that knife didn't work Lasiter took a butcher knife from the kitchen and dug it into his arm.

Police Sgt. Brian Findlen says Lasiter told officers he thought he needed to amputate his arm to keep himself from dying from the cocaine injection.

Lasiter was taken to a hospital for treatment of severe cuts.

The Denny's closed for the night.

I'm definitely being sarcastic here. I can see one tiny sliver of logic in legalizing drugs, but in my scheme it would never happen because I would want the corresponding penalties for violations committed 'under the influence' to go through the roof. I'm for personal responsibility and liberty, but I think you have to place public safety above that with respect to drugs. As if you could safely use PCP, for example.

Report: Amy Winehouse Could Be Brain-Damaged From Drugs

Shocking details of Amy Winehouse’s drug use emerged Sunday night — including a report that she binged on crystal meth and may have brain damage after a 36-hour marijuana marathon.

The singer, 24, suffered two major overdoses, with such bad convulsions that they were “like a scene from 'The Exorcist.'”

And her body is so frail from drug use that doctors were scared she would break bones during a fit.

A close friend of Amy’s warned medics that one more overdose will probably kill her.

The friend revealed:

- Amy's first overdose in August 2007 was from cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, ketamine and crystal meth.

- She was advised to see a psychiatrist after displaying “multiple personality traits” that made her a suicide risk.

- Her second overdose was in July — when she inhaled an “inhuman” amount of marijuana that left her vomiting uncontrollably and hallucinating.

At the time, Winehouse's devoted dad Mitch, 54, said it was a “bad reaction to her medication.”

Medics are worried Amy’s brain was damaged by the cannabis overdose — she displayed symptoms normally associated with schizophrenia.

“The future is bleak, bleak, bleak," the friend said yesterday.

According to this article, it would take more than 50cc of air to effect a VAE.

If that guy's using a 60cc syringle to inject cocaine, he's got a different problem on his hands than a possible air embolism.

Johnny Walker and Four Roses compete with each other not with bullets, but in terms of the traditional commercial aspects of price, advertising, availability, quality, reputation, etc. The Mafia is no longer involved. No one dies, no one, in the creation, manufacture, wholesaling, distribution, transportation, retailing of this product. For similar reasons, the same beneficial effects will ensue when, and as soon as, we legalize drugs.

The drug legalization question is fraught with emotional and moral arguments. However, I think the logic of legalizing drugs is irrefutable.

Just my opinion.
