sorry to piss in punch bowl, but how many people really have been thrown out of their homes? I think the percentage of mortgages in default is like 5%. If you lose your house, you go rent somewhere. Often it is the bank that gets stuck with most of the loss, the homeowner loses their credit rating and some equity, but moves on.
