  • The Express--A Great Movie about Life and Football

I just got back from seeing the movie The Express. It is a great movie about life and football. Even though it is advertised as a "football" movie, I labeled it first about "life" then about "football."

It is a true story about the young man named Ernie Davis, running back, who played for Syracuse from 1958-1961(in those days freshmen could not play varsity ball their freshman year).

Though the film highlights his phenomenal career, it also deals with the discrimination African-Americans faced during that era.

Most of the major college teams still would not accept "Negroes" on their teams. At the time, Davis was just one of three African-Americans on the Syracuse team.

Davis was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. He was selected as the first round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, he contracted leukemia and never played a down at the pro level. He died at age 23.

This is a "Must see" movie, IMO.

Life and football? You mean there's more to life than just football?
    I can't run no more
    With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
    Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
    A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me - Leonard Cohen
