I received a gift certificate for ITunes. I downloaded some songs, and then I found out that the songs you download can only be played from the ITunes application or an IPod. I only have an mp3 player. It's okay since I was planning on getting an IPod anyone. I do have a question though. Can the IPod play mp3s, or does it only play those m4p files you download from ITunes? I'd hate to buy it, and then not be able to play the songs I ripped from my CDs. I'm guessing I can, but wanted to be sure before I buy it.

I'm thinking about getting an IPod Classic (basically as a backup to music library) and an IPod Shuffle (for the wife when she works out and stuff like that). Any thoughts on either one of those?

It all works on Itunes. The Itunes software is really great. I'm on my second Ipod. Great fun collecting songs from the 60s and 70s

160 classic is handy but worthless as a backup. You cannot get songs back off your iPod with iTunes. You have to use other software that Apple doesnt like you using.

I would get a USB external as a backup and a Nano.

I love it and I hate it. I have an 80g classic and a 8g nano....I hate how Itunes locks machines/pods.

I use Limewire. It's free, quick, and has virtually all the good oldies, etc. that I have looked for. It also has a fair amount of good porn videos.

I don't really care for iTunes, like others have said. It's a much nicer MP3 player than everything else, though. I'd go with the nano and external drive.

I fucking hate itunes. I realize my desktop is aging, but the software takes forever to load, locks up constantly, and adding music to the library or ipod is like jerking off in a cold river of molasses. Literally took 25 minutes to add 15 songs to my playlist and then to my shuffle yesterday.

I use Amazon to buy music now as they have no digital protection and it's usually easy to find what you need. When I can't, bittorrent is always there like an old lover, waiting for that one "last" fling.

I do like the shuffle however, and it works fine as a workout companion. The battery life is great, and it's so small that you could feasibly hide it in your ass - if you ever needed to that is.

itunes is a bloated marketing device that apple uses to try and sell you bad music and boring TV.....but your computer is garbage and needs to be updated badly if it runs like that. I thought you bought a new laptop awhile back?
I like the ipod as a piece of musical hardware but hate itunes as the only means to manage the music that goes on it.

Who has some good hacks for the ipod?

Read on AppleInsider.com that Apple may finally be bending and allow DRM free music (possibly as soon as the end of the year).

Presently I rip my own existing CDs through iTunes. Once they go DRM free I will buy through iTunes Store. Otherwise I'll go through Amazon.

Just bought a SanDisk Sansa Fuze 4GB on Black Fri. Expandable to 12GB with a mini compact flash card. Also has an FM radio tuner and voice recorder. All for about half the price of a similarly configured 4th gen Nano. Money I saved I used for accessories for walking, hard case storage, etc.

Couldn't convince my daughter, though. (and I'm a Mac nut). Ended up getting her a refurbed 3rd gen 8gb Nano for $99 and found a clear hard case for $2. (birthday)

Like I said, it's nearing the end of it's usefulness. I'll probably pick up a cheap Dell with a dent in it from their factory outlet resale site soon to serve as our media hub. It's more out of sheer laziness than any good reason I still use that machine to store our photos and music and porn instead of the laptop.

Really, though the desktop's only 8 years old P42.0 with 1GB RAM, so it's not like it was a eMachine back in it's heyday. I would expect any file management software, which is all itunes is, to work significantly faster. Oh well, just more ammo for convincing the wife to upgrade soon. Moving all my shit off there is going to be a several day long task however.

                              Free?

                              Nice rationalization.
