Exactly what it say's on the tin. I'm a christian and believe in the importance of the traditional (husband,wife and kids) family. In a college class I've kind of come under attack for stating such and have been called a bigot and closed minded. So, what makes a bigot?

Higher education, where you will think freely. I would call them bigots for calling me a bigot and point out that their opinion on your opinions is more closed minded than your own opinions, since from what you've told us, you haven't insulted their position, just stated your own.

I know how you feel. I once almost got booed out of a contemporary social philosophy class for suggesting that the biological purpose of sex was reproduction, not sexual enjoyment, in pointing out a flaw in one of our TA's stupid philosophical analogies. We did get to watch some porn in that class though, so it was worth it.

Why would a social philosophy class have a problem with that statement. The biological purpose IS reproduction; sexual pleasure is the mechanism by which a whole lotta accidental reproduction takes place. Somehow I could see you getting booed out of a social philosophy class, though.

I'm actually surprised they didn't just say a Christian--because it has become en vogue to say things like this about Christians, but not other faiths.

How did a worthwhile and significant thread like this end up in here instead of FYI?

Of Ziggy's three dictionary entries, #2 obviously comes the closest--although, it completely leaves out the racial aspect of the word, which in today's usage is by far the most common.

As for the right and wrong of the whole issue--which is undoubtedly what the original poster was discussing, and why this belongs in the political room, the words BIGOT and BIGOTRY are primarily used nowadays by the bad people to disparage the good people who care enough to express the philosophies that make them good.

That can be applied to religion, politics, morality separate from religion, race, sexual preference, and probably a few other areas I've left out.

The best way for a good person to react to the charge of bigotry? Think like Patrick Henry's famous quote: "If this be treason, make the most of it"--just substitute the word, bigotry for treason.

I fail to see how thats a direct lift... The only resemblance is the plank in the eye part... so we have a person calling out someone for misapplying a verse, and then someone else calling out someone for misapplying a verse, and the later person misapplying a verse. interesting
