As a non-smoker with allergies, I do favor higher prices for cigarettes, but charging more money than exists on the planet for a pack is a bit steep.

I didn't start smoking until the SCHIP expansion passed, funded by cigarette taxes. If you care about children and providing them with adequate healthcare, you really should be smoking as much as possible. It is the humane thing to do.

The truth is that states don't want people to stop smoking, drinking, and gambling. The "sin taxes" associated with these activities are huge sources of revenue for state legislatures and the state reps are not smart enough to come up with other plans to generate enough funds to cover their public entitlements.
