Canon vs. Nikon

Mom, (bless her heart) sent a little money for Christmas and I'm thinking of putting it toward a camera upgrade. I've been using a Canon ZLR for a while now and like it, but am wondering what you guys think in terms of a smaller SLR. Any that you like or recommend? I like the movable screen that my current camera has and I think there's a Nikon out there now that has a rotating screen (extremely handy for shorter people who have to reach over others to shoot in crowds). But I don't know. I've been looking at them for a while and am no closer to a decision than I was before.

Unless you already have a ton of money ties up in lenses, lense filters and such, i would look at the new Pentax DSLR's. As far as "bang for your buck", you really can't do better.

If something were compatible with my 52mm filters, that would be a bonus. But not necessary.

You really have to do your research and then go to a camera place and try 'em out for yourself. Personally, I don't like the feel of Canon's SLRs. I think they're bulky. But that's just me. I'm a devoted Nikon fan, but I know plenty of Canon fanboys. It's kinda like Coke or Pepsi. You can't decide without trying them out yourself.

You really have to do your research and then go to a camera place and try 'em out for yourself. Personally, I don't like the feel of Canon's SLRs. I think they're bulky. But that's just me. I'm a devoted Nikon fan, but I know plenty of Canon fanboys. It's kinda like Coke or Pepsi. You can't decide without trying them out yourself.

Ty learned on a Nikomat. Dad picked up cameras, electronics in Japan while serving Nam.

Sure will, MJ. Hoping to find some deals after the holidays. D3000 looks nice but I'm willing to look at a Pentax. Used my friends Rebel DSLR and it's really nice.

For an upper level entry DSLR, you can't find many more features. Nice small sized camera, but still sturdy feeling and good ergonomics. I have used nothing but Pentax cameras. When looking at camera,s also look at lense prices.

I just got it, and am a total amateur. But I've read the video rivals $3000 HD video cameras. And the few clips I've shot look spectacular.

There's a "pancake" lens available for it that makes the package about the size of my old Canon S3. It's not pocketable, but its pretty small.

My Canon has that and I use it a lot. I wish the camera store offered the classes to folks BEFORE we bought the camera so we'd know exactly what we were buying and what was important to each consumer going in.

I just bought a Canon T3i. I wanted a single camera for use in film and photography and I think it should serve my purposes well. Some of these newer SLRs have audio inputs and from the demo footage I've seen online they shoot beautiful video in HD even in low light with the advantage of having that short depth of field of an SLR.
