Haiti challenge

With all the destruction in Haiti, we are quick to send money (which we should be), but for some reason, I feel like I should be DOING something. Since I'm not a crisis manager and can't go, my son and I have been gathering things--clothes he's outgrown or we don't like, shoes, canned food. I've heard the cruise ships leaving Baltimore are still stopping there and dropping stuff off, and I know my company will be doing something as well.

I guess I'm just wondering if there are any other ideas floating around out there and what you guys are doing.

i thought this was gonna be something like, who can find haiti on a map?

i would like to think money, to a reputable source. like the red cross. they are there and know what they need. give them the money to do it

maybe blankets, old sleeping bags, old tents. something along that line. there's a lot of people living outside without homes now.

the trick is getting anything at all there.

the one port is destroyed so the ships can't dock there. so right now you have a lot of people in needs, and you have a lot of goods to give them. but they can't get the goods to them

As long as you keep it from the Hatian gov't it'll probably do some good.

This whole event is so sad. It is times like these where I'm really grateful to have been born here. 6.7 earthquake in Los Angeles, we lose 50 people. 7.0 in Haiti, we lose potentially hundreds of thousands. staggering.

As long as you keep it from the Hatian gov't it'll probably do some good.

Good point RG. the people living in the tents are the ones who fared much better. it was th ones actually living in buildings that suffered the most.

Any time you have a major earthquake in one of these poor countries, it can be really devastating. The building codes we have here prevent a lot of the collapsed buildings you see elsewhere. I have heard though that this quake occurred closer to the surface than most, making it more devastating.

Like Retail said - as long as you can keep it from their gov't, it's probably best. Horribly corrupt, has been spinning it's wheels and doing nothing for its populace for years.

Dominican Republic isn't a shinning example of success, but given relatively the same conditions to work from, they've done a site better by themselves. Too bad it's not the politicians who are suffering from this mess.

I have a colleague in another office who is Haitian and we are sending down goods rather than money. There will be a lot of feminine supplies on their way to Haiti...Let the govt. try to steal that!
