In those days the phone was hanging on a wall in the kitchen with a rotary dial, not in their purses and pockets.

I realize that, but in those days, it was polite to give folks some warning that you were coming, like say, before you leave the house. I was never allowed to just show up at someone's doorstep except with an invitation to come out.
