"One of my greatest nightmares was having a major hurricane go up the whole Northeast Coast," Max Mayfield, the center's retired director, told The Associated Press.

He said the damage will probably climb into billions of dollars: "This is going to have an impact on the United States economy."

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said damages could exceed most previous storms because so many people live along the East Coast and property values are high.

"We've got a lot more people that are potentially in the path of this storm," FEMA Director Craig Fugate said in an interview with The Associated Press. "This is one of the largest populations that will be impacted by one storm at one time."

Best of luck to our East Coast 'Rats. It's been a while since a major hurricane hit the U.S. Take this one seriously.

I'm just sick of the media making every weather/geological event into the next great disaster so that people will tune in. The people living where this will have the greatest effect have dealt with it before, and the rest of the northeastern city folk will act like this is Katrina Dos so they can tell their grandkids they survived the Big (rainstorm) One of 2011.

THIS, i completely 100% agree with

its gonna hit carolina as barely a hurricane, by the time it hits NY it will be just a big storm with brace yourself, 70 mph winds

i bet the folks in florida are getting a big kick out of all this major disaster talk

It rained. There was wind and a few odd noises. Once or twice I considered getting up to close the window over the bed. A tree branch fell into the garden.

Will you get federal disaster assistance?

The coverage is absurd, but you do get the occasional bonus of a stupid reporter getting sludged for being a moron.

New York news, weather, traffic and sports from FOX 5 NY serving New York City, Long Island, New York, New Jersey and Westchester County. Watch breaking news live and Good Day New York.

Even when there is real reason to be worried about a storm, they put these idiots on the beach. What is the point of that? To show us it's windy in a hurricane? I'm sure that none of us could figure out that hurricanes are windy without some jackass risking his life to show us how windy it is. What ever happened to the autocams that shot bending palm trees and wiggling street signs? This dude was so impressed with himself for having a hotel room on the fourth floor, like having a room on the FOURTH floor in the oceanfront hotel in a hurricane assures your safety. There's a reason they evacuate. Moron. (wow, that was way more of a rant than I originally intended to type)

Patler, if by federal disaster assistance you mean that someone will be by with a rake, that's about all we'd need. They did declare a state of emergency yesterday... I'm wondering when the fool with the generator running will realize that we have power so the rest of us can have some peace...

i think you should go sit on your roof with a sign that says "please save me". then when the tv choppers all get there to cover the harrowing rescue, you can bring out the giant packer rats banner and give us some world wide press

Yup, that's what I meant, but since it is Federal disaster assistance it will be three guys and a rake; one to supervise and two to take turns using the rake. Shouldn't take more than 3 days to get that branch cleaned up.

We have too much tree cover for that here...It would make lousy TV. Besides, I have a cold and I'm just not willing.
