Dislodged houses floating in rivers and lakes. Hundreds of roads closed. Historic covered bridges destroyed.
Southern Vermont was shrouded in misery late Sunday after Hurricane Irene tore through, dumping rain on ground saturated earlier this year by snow and rain.
A woman was swept away in the Deerfield River in Wilmington and was feared dead, Gov. Peter Shumlin sold CNN.
The damage and flooding is so great, officials had no clear idea of the number of casualties.
"I think tomorrow we may find some bad things," said state police Capt. Ray Keefe. "I hope not."
Keefe, who said the flooding was the worst he has seen in 24 years, described scenes of utter devastation. "The storm essentially shut southern Vermont down," he said. "It's terrible."
    I can't run no more
    With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
    Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
    A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me - Leonard Cohen

Shouldn't this be in the haiku thread or something?
After lunch the players lounged about the hotel patio watching the surf fling white plumes high against the darkening sky. Clouds were piling up in the west… Vince Lombardi frowned.

I notice you haven't mentioned the effects of the tree branch falling into the garden. Too painful to recall?

It bent a green pepper plant and might have squished a grape tomato or two.

Will Oprah be broadcasting live from your garden?

Experts have said the "sea foam" covering this reporter, which he said didn't taste too good, was partially treated raw sewage.

I haven't found a link for it, but I heard there was a reporter in a live report talking about having to take cover behind a building to get out of the terrible wind, and across the street on the sidewalk a guy went by riding a bicycle.
