You don't have to forgive him, go ahead and hold a grudge, god knows I've held my share. Did he apologize? Nobody else cares very much, even though they may think it was a severely asshole remark, it is just a momentary lapse in judgement. You can't expect other people to take sides in a dispute, people just want the unpleasantness to go away.
