  • RIP Hitch

Christopher Hitchens has gotta hope he was right about the afterlife....but it's too late now.
After lunch the players lounged about the hotel patio watching the surf fling white plumes high against the darkening sky. Clouds were piling up in the west… Vince Lombardi frowned.

He is one of my greatest heros, almost needless to say. A gadfly after my own heart.

Any guy who criticiazs Mother Teresa has got to be OK.

One of the great independent thinkers. Which is to say, I often agreed with him.

Well, someone had to do your thinking for you.

Hitchens didn't like tyrants, and Mother Teresa was a kind of tyrant in her own special way.

He didn't believe in that kind of hope

Although I respected his willingness to take on unpopular stances, I often was put off by by what I felt were mean-spirited attacks. Even though I agreed on a lot of what he felt about Jerry Falwell, his public attacks following Falwell's death when the family was still in mourning seemed vicious.
              I can't run no more
              With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
              Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
              A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me - Leonard Cohen
