  • Felix Baumgartner

After lunch the players lounged about the hotel patio watching the surf fling white plumes high against the darkening sky. Clouds were piling up in the west… Vince Lombardi frowned.

Did he burn up on re-entry?

                  Still waiting for the attempt.

That suit must really be something if he can endure the speed (nearly 700mph), the pressure and heat, and not pass out.

Apparently, he pulls the parachutes rather than being automatically deployed.

Old school, pioneer stunt stuff. Very cool.

The reserve parachute has an automatic deployment system that will activate at a prescribed altitude if the main parachutes have not been deployed and if Baumgartner has not manually deployed the reserve. So, if he should be unconscious, for example, the reserve will deploy.

One article said the main chutes were left completely manual because the dangers of premature deployment, or deployment in a bad situation were just too great. This will allow him to decide when to deploy them based on what is happening, while the final automatic reserve gives him one last level of fail-safe if all else goes awry for manual deployment.

Up, up and away! I have been watching it live. They have cameras in the capsule, outside the capsule and long range tracking cameras. Live audio feed of communications with the capsule. This is fantastic!

Old record for such a jump - 102,300 feet set in 1960! The guy who set the record is the capsule communicator for Baumgartner's mission.

Target for today is 120,000 feet, but it could be as high as 130,000 feet. They will go as high as the balloon continues to rise, until it reaches equilibrium.

This guy is nuts. And this must have cost an incredible fortune.

are we taking bets on whether he blows up when he nears the sound barrier?
