This devastating fire is a disaster greater than the former largest ever fire disaster at Great Slave Lake.
The entire city (> 80 K residents) of Fort McMurray has been evacuated. 80 % of homes in Beacon Hill have been destroyed. Approx. 20% of the residents of Fort McMurray have headed south to Edmonton, Alta. Enroute many people ran out of gas. They are also running out of food along the highway.Edmonton and Fort McMurray are separated by approx. 420 KM ( about 240 miles ) and connected by a four lane highway. There is one route out to both the south and north. Those trying to evacuate north had to be turned around as the fires prevented an escape in that direction.
This disaster will impact our country economically with an immediate rise yesterday in gasoline prices . Mae and I saw gas prices rise in the order of 4-6 cents a litre depended on the distributor.
It's another hot and windy day in the area and fire fighters have an immense challenge to get this terrible fire under control. It's going to take fire fighter from across our nation being there to help out.
