MY FIRST WIRELES CONNECTIN: LIFE IS GOOD !!!!!!

Tonight my wife suggested we go to Best Buy and purchase a wireless router so we are able to log into the Internet with a laptop away from the PC

Mad and Partial would be proud; I set up the d@m thing myself even though I'm a tech Idiot.

Within about an hour I had the wireless connection set up and figured out how to make the Internet connection work from the laptop using an encription key that is about 25 characters. I struggled a bit to get the laptop logging into the wireless network but finally did.

And on a sidenote, forum discussion in here is where I remembered that the Linksyss brand was a very cost effective option. The whole solution cost about $75.

As a celebration of my first wireless experience, I'm watching "Cathouse" on HBO while being logged into Packerrats on the 17" Laptop Screen. "Passion Cove is on after.

Life is good. Thanks to all in PR for the advice I remembered from time back.

My wife's idea tonight may have created a monster.

I wasn't going to password protect it Billy because I had no idea how to set up the laptop to log in, but I accidentally did. That's what took a while; the code I had to add to the laptop was about 25 characters.

Now the laptop works.

It was kind of funny; at Best Buy the sales guy really tried giving me a hard sell on how important it is to PW protect it and have their guy come out to set it up correctly. I was open to that. He said the process could take up to two hours to do it and made it seem incredibly hard

But I paid about $72 for the whole setup. So what did the want to set it up ? $160.

Not going to happen; I know plenty of people who would pop over for a $20 and pizza if I couldn't do it.

Works like a charm though; now I can be watching the games/Skinemax on the 55" er while in Packerrats and other misc sites.

I wish I knew which neighbor it was and i'd tell them about it, but the two people who live on either side of me aren't named Joe. About how far can a wireless signal transmit?

Its just the fact that they can hack you easily and use your internet. Don't want someone to use your internet without your consent.

While an encription key is good, I'd still use another security on top of that.

I sat next to a top hacker for Dell - he was coming back from a secret hacker convention the week after the 'black bag' published convention in Vegas. It took him 6 years of networking to be allowed into this group.

He learned how to break into anyone's laptop - regardless of protection (direct connect).

We were on a plane and saw a guy in first class. This dude said, "watch this." He used XP to find the connection (the guy hadn't disable wireless) - and typed a popup msg, "This is the pilot. Wireless connections are prohibited on aircraft. Please disable the device." The guy in first class immediately shut down his PC and put it away. I was shocked.

Classic; now what you don't see in the pic is the TV in the background; we have five TV's in the house and it's almost mandatory to have a TV with the laptop now
