I caught the Biography channel's 2 hour feature on the Bee Gee's, and I was fascinated. First of all, there was 10 times the music compared to all of the other band bio's they have produced. I can only take this to mean that the Bee Gee's were unusually generous compared to others in granting permission. Their early experiences in Australia were charming--as mere children they were writing and harmonizing and playing instruments. The dreaded "disco" era and Saturday Night Fever came to them, it wasn't something they exploited originally but holy shit did they ever allow themselves to become overexposed and they paid the price for it with the ensuing derision.

Their music tends to have a markedly different structure--orchestral almost in its use of vocals. I'm sorry, but "How Deep Is Your Love?" is just beautiful, even though it was a centerpiece of the disco period.

Until I watched the show, and I watched it about ten times, I had no idea which one was Maurice, or Robin, or Barry, or Andy. Maurice ended up being a sweetheart. Barry is talented, but there is a stubborn quality about him that is a bit off-putting. Robin is so awkward it's endearing. The sad deaths of Maurice and Andy stunned me. I didn't know this stuff before.

I was so into the Bee Gees for a while that my daughters threatened to hold an intervention. I think I'm better now.
