His songs were often somber, characterized by a downbeat tone. They've been covered by musicians like Madonna and the Smashing Pumpkins. Chestnutt also had a small role in Billy Bob Thorton’s film, Sling Blade.
Chestnutt was partially paralyzed after a car accident when he was 18, and used a wheelchair for most of his life. According to statements made by his family, he had attempted suicide previously before taking muscle relaxants earlier this week.
