I saw Dire Straits in Milwaukee after their 2nd album came out (1979?)

Crowds and artists can build a certain positive synergy, as in a Bruce Springsteen concert when he holds out the microphone and the crowd sings for him. In this instance, though, the crowd was filled with drunken walnut-brained white trash that booed Mark Knoffler's sweet, simple, understated spotlight guitar solo, yelling stuff like "C'mon man! Rock n Roll!"

It was so sad, and I thought, "They don't give a damn/ 'bout any trumpet playing band/ It ain't what they call rock and roll."

Dire Straits was one of those bands that taught me that music doesn't have to fit neatly into preconceptions.

Thank God for cats like Brian Setzer and Elvis Costello and Tom Waites and Mark Knoffler and ...

My kids are discovering one good band after another from my era. I never liked Journey or Rush as a kid, but my son has discovered them and he LOVES Freddie Mercury. The 70's may save my son from Lil wayne yet.

Hi Swede.

I screwed up on that first Dire Strait's 'Sutan of Swing' post and missed the link to the actual video I watched last night. That was a 4 minute quiet versin of his guitar solo from that awesome song. I went back to that this evening and can't find the same clip. I will continue to try to find it as it was beautiful to see. Here it is ** below **.
