I thought "No Country" was very good.

I've heard that some don't like the ending (including some in the theater I was at who were saying out loud "What ...?") but I thought it was very good.

Ok, not too happy with the choice for best picture.

No Country was a fantastic movie up until the last 10-15 minutes. Then the Coen brothers did a 360 and tried to go the symbolic route instead of continuing the cat and mouse route which had been working just fine for the last 2 hours.

There Will Be Blood was a complete movie that told a fantastic story that came full circle. No Country, while good, ended with a philosophical ending which, in a movie that spent so much time on suspense, disappointed me. I'm sure some people loved the ending, but I just disliked it.

Also kinda pissed that the Coen brothers got Best Adapted Screenplay. TWBB is loosely based off Upton Sinclair's "Oil!". A lot more work went into crafting that into a movie than it did to turn McCarthy's novel into a movie.

You are making the argument for NCFOM. Since it was a book you have to adapt it. TWBB is loosely as you said based on "Oil" thus it doesn't have much of an adaptation. More of an argument that it is an original screenplay. "oil" is more of an inspiration than even coming close a work that PT adapted.

The fact that he didn't even call it Oil! speaks volumes. To quote PT, "at the end of the day, there [was] not enough of the book to feel like it [was] a proper adaptation."

I'm interested in seeing "There Will Be Blood," but I have no problem with "No Country." The ending is what really made the movie for me.

Before that point, I thought it was just "A Simple Plan" with fewer interesting characters.

3:10 to Yuma was a good movie too. I always love a good western. My fav is still Tombstone. I love Kurt Russell's line that goes something like "You called down the thunder, and I'm bringing hell with me!" after his brother was killed.
