SI.com also notice Swain before the draft:
Brett Swain, WR, San Diego State: He flew under the radar for most of the year but has caught the interests of a few teams lately. He averaged 16.8 yards on 58 receptions last season as SDSU's leading receiver. His toughness, smarts and hands could help him develop into a productive third or fourth receiver in the NFL.

Swain played safety in high school.

I heard he led the league in hang time as a punter in his local Pee Wee league in middle school.

Caleb Campbell goes to Detroit instead of Iraq, is that an improvement?

He could've went to GB... better than some WR from SDSU...Where you been man?

Got married 5 weeks ago - been busy celebrating and such. Work has been work. Off season is boring for me - needed a break after Brett retired. Baby girl coming early Sept (just in time for reg season) - not sure how often I'll be around this summer.

How you doin?

Where did Brian Johnson - the RB everyone was talking about before the draft? I think he was still hanging around heading into the 4th.

Im not a big Rodgers fan so I hope these 2 new guys show something special. Starting week 1 and destroying your vikings will be a great start for whoever it is.

Maybe yet another WR? The suspense is killing me.

Also am suprised that Ali Highsmith and Erin Henderson are still on the broad. I thought they would go b/w round 2-3.

He's said on occasion that he feels like he only has a few more seasons in him. Nobody is quite sure how much "a few" means, but he's getting up there in age and he's aware of this fact. Sooner than we like, we'll have to face a future without Driver.

Here's the call:
"Hey Ted, this is the Saints GM. We really need your pic in the 7th."
"Hmm," - TT is rolling today. "What's your offer?"
"A round of golf and a free lunch."
"No such thing as a free lunch," TT ponders.
"Well how about you realize you are just gonna cut this poor sucker - we may actually need a WR."
"MMM, lunch" - TT
"You've already traded in your division, now you want to give another conference foe an opportunity," -advises one of TT's cronies.
"lunch" - TT, "you have a deal"

Hmm... possible reason for the Swain pick: Staring at a list of guys he would consider as an undrafted FA, Swain (bein a WR) was the one guy who would NEVER EVER EVER come here out of his own volition. I mean, if you're an undrafted WR looking to make a NFL roster, Green Bay is probably the last team in the NFL that you would choose to sign with.

sepporepi
04-27-2008, 05:08 PM
We can still deal him for another 2009 pick , if he shines in preseason.

Green Bay Packers Draft Picks
Rd 2 - #5(36) Jordy Nelson (WR) Kansas St
Rd 2 - #25(56) Brian Brohm (QB) Louisville
Rd 2 - #29(60) Patrick Lee (CB) Auburn
Rd 3 - #28(91) Jermichael Finley (TE) Texas
Rd 4 - #3(102) Jeremy Thompson (DE) W Forest
Rd 4 - #36(135) Josh Sitton (OT) C Florida
Rd 5 - #15(150) Breno Giacomini (OT) Louisville
Rd 7 - #2(209) Matt Flynn (QB) LSU

Well, how does this draft look to you? Time will tell what the impact is. As many have said, since Green Bay had few needs and not much player movement (save the huge retirement, but had a successor in place of course) there were probably going to be less picks, and less guys who were drafted to have to depend on right away.

Nelson, Lee and Finley make the biggest year one contributions, while the other draftees get into the system and get comfortable.

I'm happy with this draft. We got two OL prospects one who has a chance to play this year and one who has tremendous potential longterm. We got a good player at CB that projects to end up at #4 or so on the depth chart by the end of the season. We got a backup TE with a high ceiling and a good attitude. The more I read about and watch videos of Nelson the more I like him, I think he has a shot to be great. Thompson will probably push Montgomery off of the roster and I think he will get a good number of snaps this year.

The picks I don't really like are the two QBs (though we need some backups, I'm just not high on Brohm and I have trouble seeing Flynn making the roster since I think we need a veteran) and Swain (he might be great, I'm just struggling to understand why we pick him.)

Love the first 5 picks and Flynn. Hate the other 3. Makes no sense. I'd rather have another punter to give Ryan competition.

Read the blurbs on the two OL on the JSOnline Blog. There's a lot there to feel hopeful about. Some folks think that Sitton might well be a steal, and he was flying up draft boards since he was discovered and he projects naturally to guard in this system. Other folks think that despite the fact that Giacomini is pretty raw, he has a shot at growing into a great player if a team is patient with him. He's big, intense, mean, a little crazy, and has experience with the system.

I like Nelson, Lee, and Finley, and the two O Linemen sound like they could be good, but that's about it.

It's especially disgusting to see a lot of teams get players who could be decent in the last couple of rounds, and we got throwaways--seemingly.

Hadn't noticed until now that the punter who was drafted, Durant Brooks, went in the second round to Washington. I've read that he's fantastic and has worked closely with Ray Guy, but he'd better be close to Ray Guy's skill level to go that high.

I'd bet and hope that Ken DeBauche from Wisconsin gets a look from his home town team (I believe he's from Suamico). One other punter I wanted to mention: I got to see the Temple-Army game at West Point this year (my wife's nephew is a second year cadet at West Point), and Army's punter, Owen Tolson, is as good a college punter as I've seen in a long time. He was one of a small number of punters invited to the NFL combine. Since Army players now have the opportunity to play in the NFL right away, he could be well worth a look.

Check again...Brooks went in the sixth.....not second round. Only Sherman drafts punters that high.

Interesting draft. Hopefully Brohm is better than I fear he will be when Rodgers get's hurt. He's not strong armed and that could limit his effectiveness in poor weather.

I was also somewhat disappointed in today's selections. The board didn't seem to fall our way. I was hoping to get a running back that could provide a great complement to Grant. Didn't happen.

Nelson looks like he'll be a weapon. Finley too.

We got better, just not at RB.

Seventh Round Picks for Packers:

Round 7, Pick 2 (209) (From Rams through Vikings) Matt Flynn QB 6'2" 228 LSU

Pick Analysis:

Flynn is a good decision maker, who has played in a successful program at LSU. With Brett Favre's departure, the Packers look to be stockpiling quarterbacks in order to create some competition for Aaron Rodgers.

Round 7, Pick 10 (217) (From Bengals through Rams) Brett Swain WR 6'1" 200 San Diego State

Pick Analysis:

Swain has decent speed and size, but he's not particularly outstanding in any particular area. But he does have a chance to make the roster as a depth wide receiver. The Packers have done well in the past taking receivers late in the draft with players such as Donald Driver and Ruvell Martin.

PACKERS FOREVER!

The Packers have done well in the past taking receivers late in the draft with players such as Donald Driver and Ruvell Martin.

Ruvell Martin was not drafted. I believe he was signed as an UDFA by the Chargers organization and cut, when Green Bay picked him up and assigned him to the Amsterdam Admirals in 2005.

Check again...Brooks went in the sixth.....not second round. Only Sherman drafts punters that high.

Oops...I saw the 2 by his name on the NFL.com page, but it was as the second pick of the sixth round...my bad.
Well, in the sixth he's a heckuva pick.

I'm very surprized too Vince, that TT didn't pick a RB.

All I see is Grant.

He's likely going to wait like he did last season getting GRANT.

Packers Forever!

You're right--he wasn't drafted:

It says the Chargers sent him to Amsterdam in 2005 but then cut him the next year, and that's when the Packers got him.

I think the writer's point was "Gee, the Packers have done well at WR with guys other teams didn't want real badly"

Well, we have Grant now, and Jackson appeared to be "getting it" by the end of the season and was a much more decisive runner so he might have promise. Herron, Morencey, and Wynn are bodies that are likely not worse than anybody we would have drafted in the 5th round are later.

I also recall there were a couple of guys that they were high on last training camp that unfortunately suffered season ending injuries, so maybe we'll get something out of one of those guys. But I agree, Grant is the only certain thing that we have going into this year; but then again nobody we took in the draft would have been a sure thing either.

I think the board just didn't fall for us to take a WR. There was nobody who was a good value at RB in any of our day 1 picks and nobody on day 2 seemed a high priority.

You forgot Swain?

Right you are! Didn't click and drag far enough! Thanks. Kind of wish Swain had been the kid from Army that the Lions got. He was getting major pub on ESPN and if he stuck with Green Bay would have been a fan favorite, probably a special teams ace.

so, we drafted 6 white guys

thats gotta be some sort of modern day record

Giacomini is Brazilian by descent (his parents immigrated from Brazil), are you counting him as white?

Also, Mike, he may well be a lot crazy.

yeah i counted him as white, i thought he was italian with the name

so 5 white guys, still could be a record

Seems to be my fault that we slouched after we picked Thompson - I fell asleep!

Clearly, TT missed my "presence" and did his own thing after that.

My bad, sorry everyone.

I've been out of town. Can someone summarize what was said in the previous 1100 posts, or do I have to read the whole frickin' thing?

Don't forget to read the Day 1 thread too, and when you're done with that you can take a look at the UDFA thread.

Happy reading!

If you want a summary we drafted the following players: Jordy Nelson, Brian Brohm, Patrick Lee, Jermichael Finley, Jeremy Thompson, Josh Sitton, Breno Giacomini, Matt Flynn and Brett Swain.

People tend to like the first five picks, are unsure what to think about the two OL (Sitton and Giacomini), and scratch their heads about the last two picks.

If by people you mean me, I liked the Flynn pick.
