Jay Bennett, ex-member of band Wilco, dies at 45

New York Times

Posted: 05/25/2009 09:36:20 PM PDT
Updated: 05/25/2009 09:36:21 PM PDT

Jay Bennett, a singer and songwriter who was a former member of the rock band Wilco, died on Sunday at home in Urbana, Ill. He was 45.

The cause is still unknown. Representatives of his management company, Undertow Music Collective, said he died in his sleep. Edward Burch, a friend and collaborator, told The Chicago Sun-Times that an autopsy was being done. No information about survivors was available.

Last month Mr. Bennett complained on his MySpace page about severe pains in his hip. He needed hip-replacement surgery, he said, but did not have proper health insurance.

A burly, dreadlocked figure with a cracking, plaintive rasp, Mr. Bennett played in the Replacements-influenced power-pop band Titanic Love Affair during the 1990s and released four solo albums. But he is best known for his role in Wilco, the Chicago band that expanded the earthy, folk-influenced sound of the alt-country genre with more abstract, experimental rock.

Mr. Bennett joined Wilco in 1994, shortly after the recording of the band's first album, "A.M.," which was released the next year. Beginning with "Being There" in 1996, he played keyboards, guitar and various other instruments, and gradually his role grew. With "Summerteeth" in 1999 and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," released in 2002, Mr. Bennett became a key part of the band's song writing, often as a darker foil to the more fragile style of the lead singer, Jeff Tweedy. A perfectionist in the studio, Mr. Bennett took an active hand in the recording process.

He also played on "Mermaid Avenue," the band's Grammy-nominated 1998 project with Billy Bragg, which set unpublished lyrics by Woody Guthrie to music, as well as on its sequel, "Mermaid Avenue II," in 2000.

But as documented in "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," a 2002 film about the recording of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and the band's extended struggle with its record company, Mr. Bennett and Tweedy frequently clashed in the studio, as Mr. Bennett bristled over the band's increasingly noisy direction.

"I was starting to feel more and more limited, and Jeff recognized that," Bennett told Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot in 2002. "It's like breaking up with a girlfriend. At first it really hurts, but you realize once your ego heals that it was the right thing to do. We're both better off that it happened."

Tweedy fired Mr. Bennett from Wilco shortly before the release of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," which became the band's commercial breakthrough. Relations between the two men remained chilly. This month Mr. Bennett sued for breach of contract, contending that he was owed royalties from his work on Wilco albums as well as money from the film. The suit has not been settled, a Wilco spokeswoman said.

After his split with Wilco, Bennett released four albums solo and with Burch has done production work for other artists, including a 2005 album by Blues Traveler.

Tacoma, Washington -- His guitar playing was unique. Bob Bogle is the one who came up with the distinctive guitar sound of The Ventures on songs like "Walk, Don't Run" and the theme to "Hawaii Five-O." Both were top 10 hits in the 60s when the band sold millions of albums.

Bogle first realized how big the band had gotten when they traveled to Japan in 1964. He told AP Radio in 1996 "There was about 10,000 people at the airport." He thought they were there to greet someone else until he saw the sign "Welcome, the Ventures." Bogle has now died. He was 75.

Not a big fan of Barry Bonds (and I respect him as baseball icon), but I gotta give it to my man, San Quinn (met with him many times in the Bay over the years and many Bay Area rappers in my day) as this is pretty good ass stuff in a tribute to LL Cool J's classic rap....Good stuff:

OK...one more.

I helped hook this vid up with my man, Shortman, on Youtube back in the day. Snake got kicked over BS copyright shit...and I never went back.

Anyway, this rapper (Nickatina) OWNS EVERY rapper ALIVE (note I didn't say 2pac). Used to have up (300 plus rap vids up) and 40 plus Nickatina vids I mixed up to the song (pretty much made THIS video) but I got kicked over a year ago. Fuck youtube. Much luv to my homeboy, as this is still alive on here.

King Nicky (met him twice in the Bay...he's just as big as Snake and is also 6'5" and mean ass looking) is the man (and nudity in this vid so NSFW and it's on Youtube, so WTF eh?).

Situation's critical..fuck a 9 to 5:

As long as I'm on here....one more.

This is a happy ass song with Too Short and many guys from the Bay, like E-40, Mac Mall, etc. (my fav. in raps as Snake has over 3000 Bay albums).

I remember bumping this tune when in came out in 1999 out my BMW I bought in the Bay on a vacation at 19 years old with my buddies from there (we drove back to WI). Windows rolled down and just a bumping....local peeps just loving hearing it. Great fucking times.

I still send this vid to my buds when they are down on their luck. It's happy and fun. Just awesome sauce, yo. Really happy stuff.

Caught in the moment...Freakout, lol. It's hard to go on Youtube and not get caught up looking at other songs/videos. Used to spend days on there.

I realize most Rats could give a shit about rap, and that's cool, so I put myself out on an island with it, but really love the 90's Raps (mostly Bay and haven't cared about any rap since about 2001...just real shit, not the fake ass bling-bling party jams flashing jewelry and a new ride). I met many rappers out the Bay Area, Milwaukee, etc. Pretty nice guys, overall.

Truly, I really like current rock more now, as I've gotten off the rap vibe in the past few years (but still like the 90's stuff). So anyone with some good current rock, post it up please. Thanks.

This is how it was. Wish I met 2Pac. Biggest musical influence in Snake's Life was 2pac...I mean that. I'm white, but stand up for your beliefs...and then some:

2pac said it straight up how it was...and been dead for 13 years and still relavent.....Snake at 16 hit his head on a car in the parking lot in HS when I heard he died. Passed out. I did that. It still fucked my mind up. Doubt any Rats could care less, but I'm sad as fuck 2pac is gone. He is/was the man.

2pac's shit still rings true with our fucked up government:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-taOIaPdxY

I'm concerned most of ya care about old ass shit that didn't affect anything in music. 2pac was/is the medium of how those wack ass rappers STILL base their shit on. I gave up rap around 2001. 2pac was all about change...kinda like Rage Against the Machine.

Crazy beats and RIP Mac Dre with the best rapper alive Andre Nickatina (met that dude twice in the Bay Area):

Andre Nickatina and Mac Dre - Cadillac Girl:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_4NVZO8t3U

"Keys right there, I'm ready to drive. Like an eagle at 12, I'm ready to fly. Pager goin' off, my cell phone's ringin'. Al Green's playing, I'm still singin'."

Crazy ass beats. King Nicky is the fucking man. Owns any rapper alive. Fuck 50 Cent, Lil' Wayne, etc. The reason Snake gave up rap since 2001 was because all those fake posers nowadays in rap care about is money, jewelry. Can't stand that shit. They all wanna be 2pac...but name one song where he talked about that shit. NONE. 2pac was the best EVER but yet all these fake ass bitches keep trying to be him (50 Cent, etc.) and have no soul.

Old school beats with a story is the way it's handled. Good stuff. Get at Snake and I'll send you some rare ass MP3's via email...over 3000 underground rap CD's on my HDD. Holla. Got everything.

To my dead homie 2pac (best rapper by far EVER)...just found an HD version of "Hail Mary"...one of the best 2pac songs/videos EVER. This was on his last official CD "The 7 Day Theory" before he died in 1996. Thank god I got all 18 Makaveli (2pac) bootleg Cd's I bought on Ebay back in 1999 before courts blocked selling them anywhere. Paid $300 10 years ago...well worth the money. Priceless now. They leak out "new" 2pac songs yearly on "new" Cd's. Too bad Snake has all 300 songs unreleased. Buddies offer me hella cash to burn 'em. Snake still says hell no.

Regardless, this is a kick-ass video of 2pac's last official CD in HD glory. Enjoy:

Partial, you could get laid to this song if you played your cards right. Snake got plenty with this tune in 2000 and beyond. Chicks dig it! Used to have a killer video up for this on youtube with 100,000 hits, but it got taken down (too hot for TV with Snake's video editing). Here's the song regardless:

Way too mainstream for Snake's underground rap taste, but for some reason this is one of the best videos I EVER saw for rap. Met Xzibit in 2004 in Vegas at the Rain niteclub where he performed. Just a nice guy. Drank some Alize' with him and his crew in the VIP club afterwords. $14 for a bottle of Corona. Damn. Glad Snake had his credit cards. I had to pose with my buddy as Art Vandelay doing "importing/exporting" to get some cred at the time with the preppy blonde ho's acting all Paris Hiltonesque. Samoan bouncer dudes were laying into guys left and right who "weren't" VIP. LOL. Snake survived and met some nice Minn. college hotties me and my buddy "let" into the club with our bogus "VIP" passes. Great fucking nite.

AWESOME vid. Top 5 EVER. Thank god I have no kids or this shit would be about how it is trying to get out the damn house:
