San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car crash on July 14 and will be limited in his coaching duties during training camp, the team announced on Saturday.

Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and team coordinators will handle head coaching responsibilities in the interim.

Shanahan suffered three broken ribs, a broken hand, broken nose, sustained a "severe" concussion and needed more than 40 stitches after colliding with an SUV near his Northern California home, ESPN reported.

"San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries," the team said in a statement. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.

"Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period."

Patrick Mahomes has motored past an important checkpoint in his return from last year's season-ending knee injury on the final Friday before the Chiefs' veterans report to training camp.

The superstar quarterback has been fully cleared to participate in training camp, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday.

"It was always the goal to be able to practice when we got to training camp, so we kind of hit that next step, and now it's going to be about building and keep getting better and better so that whenever the regular season comes along I can try to be available and ready to play," Mahomes said.

Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL tear late in Kansas City's Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, a loss that also officially eliminated K.C. from the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era.

Both Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch will officially begin Lions training camp on the PUP list.

The Commanders announced the departure of tight ends coach Ben Steele on Monday morning and declined further comment about why the offseason addition to Dan Quinn’s staff was leaving the team just before the start of training camp.

Nicki Jhabvala of TheAthletic.com reports that Steele was dismissed due to a violation of team policy. Jhabvala also reports that Steele was arrested on suspicion driving while intoxicated on June 7 and faces additional charges for refusing to take a blood/breath test and obstructing or resisting an officer without force.

Per the report, Steele notified the Commanders about the arrest. The team informed the league and Steele was placed on paid leave. With Steele on leave, offensive assistant Wes Welker worked with the tight ends at minicamp.

Quinn is expected to name a replacement tight ends coach on Tuesday, which is also when the full Commanders squad is due to report to training camp.

Kyle Shanahan got into a car accident where he broke his hand and three ribs, his nose and had lacerations that required 40 stitches. He also suffered a severe concussion. He's in the coaches version of the concussion protocol and his wife (?!) was calling team leaders to give them the news just prior to camp. Which is kinda funny (and I don't mean witty) since Kyle has supposedly been in the building since the accident.

The other driver got away injury free. The police say its not their policy to announce fault in the accident. Drugs and alcohol were ruled out. The accident occurred July 14 and broke yesterday, the day of a John Lynch PC. Which means a LOT of people sat on this report. And I don't just mean scoopsters beholden to GM sources, but all media and all law enforcement folks, which is rare. Even TMZ didn't break it.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The son of Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been arrested and charged with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, the wife of the Kansas City offensive coordinator, authorities in Virginia said Monday.

The Loudon County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded late Sunday to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, where the couple still had a home from Bieniemy's time coaching the Washington Commanders. They found the 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy with multiple gunshot wounds, and she was transported to a hospital where she was in stable condition Monday.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of the couple, was arrested early Monday in connection with the shooting. He has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, and is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.

The sheriff's office said the investigation was ongoing.

Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, earlier Sunday. He was not present for Monday's workout involving rookies, quarterbacks and a few veterans, which was closed to the public.

"Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers with them," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said afterward. "I can't get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and we'll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus.

"She's a saint, we all know that, those of you that know her. One of God's great blessings," Reid added. "But things happen. And you have to work through it. That's where we're at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal."

Shanahan's injuries sound like he wasn't wearing his seat belt. Not smart if that was the case.

Just a personal aside: I can't stand the phrase "thoughts and prayers." That doesn't mean jack shit, except you want everyone to know how sympathetic you are and you don't want to be left out. Reid is talking about it like it's a football injury to work through. I'm pretty sure "you have to work through it" isn't the same for Eric Bienemy or Mia Bienemy as it is for a player rehabbing a torn achilles. Their fucking son shot his mother. Say something real, for Chrissakes, Andy. You don't just "work through it."

He's only got a year left and he doesn't rush the passer like an edge so his trade cost will be substantial but not close to Parsons. However, he wants a new deal and I am not sure the currently very streamlined Packers have another contract like that in them without losing more key pieces shortly.

His last Pro Bowl season was 2020. He had serious injuries in 2021 and 2022. Hasn't been the same player since. He's only started 17 games over the last 4 seasons.
