Raji, Matthews show up, speak
While most of the Packers' rookies will speak with Wisconsin reporters for the first time in person on Friday, first-round picks B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews got a jump start this afternoon.
I'll hammer out some quick hits while they speak at their brief introductory media conference.
* Thoughts on Green Bay? Matthews: "It's definitely a change from Southern California ... but it'll be a change of pace I'm looking forward to." Raji: Born and raised in NYC. "It's a little slower lifestyle, which I'm sure I'll get accustomed to."
* What have they been doing today? Matthews: Administrative stuff -- medical equipment, sized for equipment, etc. Raji: Dropped off stuff at hotel, came here.
* Know anyone on the team? They're both Athletes First clients, so they know Aaron Rodgers, Brian Brohm. Raji knows Will Blackmon from BC.
* Matthews: Worked out with Raji, among other athletes before draft. "We definitely got a head start on the training process. ... (Raji) pushes you day in and day out." Raji called Matthews right after Matthews was drafted to celebrate.
* Matthews: "I'm real giddy to get going. ... Now comes a different set of pressure."
* How did they go about getting a feel for the team, city, etc.? Raji: Still was shocked most of Saturday. Sunday, went on Packers Web site and got feel for organization. Looked up Green Bay on Wikipedia. Matthews: Did the same thing. Looked up Green Bay on the map. Then went on Wikipedia, too, checked out coaches and their backgrounds, etc.
* Matthews: Couldn't think of better program to fit into, especially with 3-4. "Everything about this program, really, I think it speaks for itself." Uncle played with Packers GM Ted Thompson, strength and conditioning coach Dave Redding worked out dad back in Cleveland ... lot of ties.
* Raji: Talked with d-line coach today, talked about where playing. Will play some nose tackle, some defensive end. Goals? Big thing is getting grasp of defense, what defense asks to do. "If I'm ready opening day to start, I'd love to have that opportunity, but if not" willing to do whatever it takes to help team win.
* Matthews: "I'm going to come out here and compete and I'm going to give everything I got. ... If I can get on the field early and often, I'd love that."
* Raji: Have lot in common with Matthews because both had to work to get to this point. Weren't all-America in high school, etc. Haven't been handed anything.
* Anything common in schemes from college? Raji: Played a little 5-technique (like a 3-4 end) in college. Stressed that to Packers at combine. Matthews: "I think it's real similar. At SC, we ran a 4-3; however, it had the principles of a 3-4" because had elephant position, where Matthews played, rushing as outside linebacker. Now that in true 3-4 system, can use those skills.
* Raji: Told fortunate because defense is new to everybody. "As far as being at a disadvantage, we're not at that."
* How important to come in and contribute right away? Raji: "I believe that attitude is altitude." Both have workman's mentality. "It's great for us to be in this position ... but at the end of the day, we know we have to work and earn our keep." Matthews: Definitely pressure as first-round picks, but nothing new from college.
* Matthews: Talked to Kevin Greene right after draft. Admired how played back in the day. "Everyone who I've talked to said he's a heck of a coach. ... Just watching how he played back in the day, he was ferocious and got after it, and that's how I want to emulate my game."
* Raji's character in question after reports of positive marijuana test (later refuted) at scouting combine? Raji: "It's a shame." Admits he had a positive marijuana test at BC. On SI.com report, "For people who never met ... that's the perception they get." Knew it wasn't true. Had opportunities to talk to doctors, and they said "everything was cool."
* Matthews on Internet report about himself testing positive for steroids: "Completely false." Talked to administrator. "It's unfortuante, but we're in this position we are today. ... You learn from it and you grow from it, really."
* On Matthews' weight when he arrived at USC: Says been exaggerated. Says was 228 coming into USC, 220 after camp. "People can put on weight (if) they work hard." All the Matthewses were late bloomers, put on weight late. Also grew in height in college, from 6-foot or 6-foot-1 when arrived.
Ends with Matthews holding up his No. 52 jersey next to Raji's No. 90.
