19 spots are somewhat open by my estimation. Probably the last 5 or 10 are highly competitive.

I would add Clifton. They would have someone other than Moll as his top backup if they were planning on releasing him.

No reason to think Justin Harrell won't be on the team.

Nick Barnett will make the roster.

Yeah. Barnett too. I left a few off because I think there is a chance with injury/age that maybe we'd go a different direction.

Patrick Lee and Blackmon are two that haven't shown anything on defense but are young and athletic that you think will probably make it.

          Ruvell has a solid shot.

          Harrell too

I kept the list to guys that I was pretty darn sure of, guys where almost no doubt crossed my mind (except extreme injury or other completely unexpected circumstance). All these guys had a seed of doubt to me. Barnett injury. Clifton health/age. Blackmon defensive ablity, harrell healthy, and on and on. . ..

Barring injuries, Clifton, Barnett, and Blackmon will make it. Lee is a good bet. Teams don't give up on 2nd round picks after one year.

Harrell and Ruvell aren't locks, but should make the team.

Barbre should make the team but he isn't a lock yet. If he bombed during the preseason and Lang and Giacomini showed better, I could see them going another direction. Poppinga and Bishop are probably solid bets to make the team.

            Battles

            3rd RB
            2nd FB
            3rd TE
            8th and possibly 9th OL
            6th DL
            #8-10 LB
            #4 S
            #10 DB
            Punter

I see about 12 open roster spots.

Ruvel is no where near a lock. I wouldn't count out Jamarko Simmons.

At this point it would take a collapse of Barbre for him to not make it. He's the number 1 RT and they want to solidify the line as early in camp as possible.

Since just about every report has been commenting on Swain's performance, I think Ruvell is going to find himself in a significant battle.

Being no.1 on the depth chart in May/June is kind of meaningless when your competition for the position is a second year player on rehab and a rookie or two. Barbre is almost there by default, although it sounds like he is doing well for now. I guess we will know for sure when Giacomini and Wells are cleared to practice and Meredith and Lang get up to speed.

I'm not sure Barbre has to collapse to not make the team. With so many young players whose performances could influence decisions at the RT position, (Sitton, Lang, Meredith, Giacomini) Barbre could be in a spot that he has to be the starter or won't make the team. They may be ready to move on to someone else for development. Wells could be in a similar situation, be the starter or be gone. There is a real domino effect for Wells, beyond just his own performance.

Also, he was battling for the starting LG spot at this point last year. Colledge beat him out and he barely saw the field. Same thing could happen this year. I hope not because I think he has intriguing talent, but I wouldn't call him a lock just yet.

Ya, you gotta love an O-lineman who was the gunner on his punt team in college!

I have a good feeling about what the O-line might be this year and in the future. Last year at this time I didn't hold out much hope for Colledge to be the starter at LG, but he really did seem to get untracked last year. Spitz, Sitton, Lang, Barbre, Giacomini, Meredith; from that group hopefully there are four other quality starters for the future.

I expect Tony Moll to be gone before the season gets here; BUT, I also will not be completely surprised if he finds a role for himself, too. He has really had an uphill battle, coming into the NFL with only one season as a lineman, getting bounced around from one position to another when he really didn't know any O-line position very well, then losing most of his 2nd season to injuries. I give him credit for hanging in there when guys with better resumes as O-linemen have come and gone (Coston, Whitticker and a raft full of FAs). I find myself pulling for him to do well.

The really odd situation at RT would be if there is no clear cut leader, no one who stands out as ready. It would be easy to see Breno or Lang in that situation, but this is Barbre's first work at right tackle in two years.

There is no established veteran to beat out, so what is the Mendoza line at RT? A level of play below which they either say a prayer for 6 games and bring Tauscher back on PUP or sign a stopgap. Maybe Derrick Frost can play RT better than punt.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I'm not worried about RT. Breno and Barbre are two decent enough prospects. This isn't 2005 or 2006 when two rookies were starting on the OL. I think it will be OK.

Nobody on the roster can touch Blackmon as a PR. As long as he contributes at a high level there, I don't think it matters if he's not much of a CB. This assumes he stays healthy, which is always a crap shoot for him.
