The Cleveland Browns have an offense built for 15th century siege warfare. Stand your ground, don't move around alot and wait until you land a large bomb to score (Cribbs or Trebuchet) or settle for a stalemate and punt. With no help from the offense, the Cleveland D was the better half, but still bottom third in almost every category compared to the league. How this team won 5 games should be the subject of theological studies, not the realm of safremetricians.
Fast forward to the turn to the 19th century and Napoleon shows up in the form of the much taller, larger and Nordic Mike Holmgren. What does he do? He dumps both starting QBs, a decision few would protest. What will he do instead? He hires the perennial backup Seneca Wallace and a QB with a fork stuck in his helmet formerly known as Jake Delhomme.
So between this and his stint in Seattle, what can we tell about Mike Holmgren? One, he is clearly now suffering a brain disorder due to low Omega-3 levels (seafood is not as good in Cleveland as Seattle) and he is low on caffeine. Two, he probably isn't a good GM or Vice-President of Resurrection.
But it seems he is willing to trust his head coach on defense while taking over the reigns on offense with Gil Haskell helping to install a version of Homgren's offense. He has QB vets to run the offense, one passable RB with a pass catching backup and one WR. I am sure there is a TE on this roster but I have 6 tabs open in Opera and I am not opening a seventh this far before the draft.
So my guess is that Holmgren believes that he can build a West Coast Offense out of string, paper clips and some gum. Basically, MacGuyver it in the short term. He will therefore look to draft defensive help first, but with an eye to BPA since this roster is terrible. But I am leaning more to the former, since I do not believe Holmgren is a terribly patient GM.
The BPAs for offense might have included Jimmy Clausen who is gone and all expected OL prospects since only Okung (predictably) has been claimed and Dez Bryant. But O line is the one of the few areas of the team with any semblance of talent. Dez Bryant might be the only guy to tempt Holmgren to offense here. But we are going defense.
The secondary makes the Packers injury depleted DBs of 2009 look like the 1981 San Francisco 49ers. Or the 1983 LA Raiders. Since Berry is off the board,
"With the seventh selection of the 2010 Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Joe Haden, CB, from the University of Florida."
