Action and reaction: Safety Nick Collins escaped injury Saturday night when his feet went out from under him and he went crashing into the wall at the northeast corner of Lambeau Field. Thompson doesn't intend to test his luck again.

On Monday, Thompson announced plans to extend the outdoor carpet that covers the cement pathway adjacent to the wall in the end zones. By doing so, the Packers hope to minimize the possibility of serious injury.

"Behind the bench there's really no danger," Thompson said. "But when people run corner routes and out routes down in the red zone that becomes a little bit more dangerous. So we're going to try to rectify that. That was a nasty fall."

Coach Mike McCarthy also called for corrective measures to be taken. Collins suffered a bruised back but practiced Monday.

RB Arliss Beach probably will be allowed to return this week, according to Thompson. Beach has been out since suffering a concussion July 30 after being belted by LBer Abdul Hodge in a blitz-pickup drill.

Receiver Greg Jennings wasn’t dressed in pads for Tuesday afternoon’s practice.

Jennings suffered a thigh injury late in Monday night’s practice, which coach Mike McCarthy described as a sore muscle. Jennings wore shorts and spent part of Tuesday’s practice inside the Don Hutson Center while his teammates worked out on Clarke Hinkle Field.

Safety Atari Bigby was wearing a cast on his right hand on Tuesday. He hurt his hand in Saturday night’s scrimmage and McCarthy said he was getting a second opinion on whether it was broken.

Highly regarded rookie receiver Greg Jennings has recovered from a hip flexor injury in time to play on Saturday.

The second-round pick out of Western Michigan practiced on Thursday morning after sitting out earlier this week. Jennings has played his way onto the first-team offense in training camp - earning early praise from Favre - and will likely see time with the No. 1 offense on Saturday.

"I've been rotating in with the ones all camp, so more than likely I'll be in there with the ones," Jennings said. But that doesn't necessarily mean Jennings will get to rest once McCarthy pulls his veteran starters out of the game.

"I don't expect to be done after the first quarter," Jennings said, laughing.

"So definitely, I expect to get my share of reps." Jennings said he's excited that the team has allowed him to work with the first team so quickly.

"I'm excited about it, and I just want to continue to show progress and continue to get better," Jennings said.

"And that way, I'll permanently be there."

G/T Will Whitticker said an MRI showed that he does not have a completely torn hamstring, but it is severe enough to keep him out for at least another week.

Whitticker said the plan was to try to start running in the middle of next week.

Coach Mike McCarthy said tackle Chad Clifton (knee) would definitely play against San Diego and receiver Greg Jennings (hip, groin) and running back Najeh Davenport (calf) were probable.
