Underwood injury could be serious

SAN DIEGO – Safety Marviel Underwood sustained what might be a serious injury early in the Packers’ loss to San Diego in their exhibition opener Saturday night.


Underwood’s knee buckled while he was trying to avoid a block on San Diego’s fourth play of the game. Underwood was in the starting lineup in place of injured Marquand Manuel.

Underwood barely moved while on the ground after the injury and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg as he was helped from the field. Coach Mike McCarthy said he didn’t know the severity of the injury or whether Underwood had torn his anterior-cruciate ligament, which would be a season-ending injury. But Underwood had his leg heavily wrapped and was on crutches after the game.

“He was on crutches. He was disappointed,” McCarthy said.

The Packers had at least four other injuries Saturday night. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett hurt his finger; defensive tackle Kendarick Allen strained his side; tight end David Martin injured his hamstring; and running back Samkon Gado hurt his groin.

Packers safety Manuel back on the field

Safety Marquand Manuel, acquired by the Packers in the off-season but sidelined since the beginning of camp with a calf injury, is back on the field practicing with the first team.

Manuel was activated off the "physically unable to perform" list today.

His return comes two days after the Packers lost safety Maviel Underwood for the season with a knee injury in the exhibition game against the San Diego Chargers.

Injury update Tues. Aug.15,2006

Running back Samkon Gado, who pulled a groin muscle at San Diego, did not practice Monday and wasn't sure when he'd return. The good news is it's just a muscle pull, not a tear, and Gado said he's feeling fine.

"They didn't give me a time frame," he said. "It could be days, it could be weeks, you just never know with groins. It all depends on how you attack the training and the rehab."

Gado said he got hurt in the third quarter when his foot got caught underneath a player and his leg twisted. He played one more play and limped off, fearing the injury was much worse.

"The rule of thumb is they wait 48 hours before they start doing anything, and it hasn't been 48 hours yet," he said. "But if I feel this good before 48 hours, I feel very optimistic about getting back on the field real soon."

Of the other injuries sustained on Saturday, defensive tackle Kenderick Allen (abdominal muscle) remained out. Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett (finger) and tight end David Martin (hand) returned to practice.

Receiver Leo Bookman (ankle) also returned to practice.

Linebacker Kevin Schimmelman and fullback A.J. Cooper sat out for unspecified reasons.

INJURY REPORT - Tuesday 15 Aug. 2006

Wide receiver Robert Ferguson (heel) missed both practices. Linebacker Kevin Schimmelmann (foot) missed for the second straight day. Cornerback Therrian Fontenot (hip) missed the morning practice, but returned at night.

William Whitticker (hamstring), Samkon Gado (groin), A.J. Cooper (shoulder), Kenny Peterson (ankle), Kenderick Allen (abdominal), Kurt Campbell (hamstring), Patrick Dendy (ankle), Mike Hawkins (knee) and Atari Bigby (hand) continued to miss practice.

Franks, Chad Clifton, Ahman Green, Najeh Davenport, Brady Poppinga and Marquand Manuel rested in the morning.

Underwood remains on the roster, but is expected to be out for the year with a knee injury. Wayne Lucier (ankle) missed the morning practice before he was cut.

Cornerback Ahmad Carroll and rookie defensive linemen Dave Tollefson and Johnny Jolly dropped out of practice. Carroll had his left hamstring wrapped; Jolly, his right calf; and Tollefson, his shoulder or upper back.

Wide receiver Robert Ferguson returned to practice at least on a limited basis.

Gado, Campbell, Tollefson, Allen return to practice

Four players who missed most of last week because of injuries returned to practice Monday afternoon. They included running back Samkon Gado, linebacker Kurt Campbell, defensive end Dave Tollefson and defensive tackle Kenderick Allen.

Missing from practice were fullback William Henderson, who’s expected to have surgery on his knee and be out for 3-6 weeks; and tackle Todd Williams, who injured his left knee in Saturday night’s preseason game.
