  • Things To Look For vs SD

Since we have a lot of young players, I expect the usual pattern of the 1st string playing 1 series would not apply for us. Obviously, Brett, Driver, Franks, Clifton and Tausher should go one and done.

The other potential 1st string players should at least go the whole 1st half. These guys all need experience.

Specific things I'm looking for is the amount of mistakes such as offsides, and false starts. I love the fact that Jag pulled a few lineman out that jumped early in practice. No excuse for not knowing the snap count. I wanna see the intensity level of our young guys.

Specific players that I will be watching are the obvious ones like Hawk and our O line rookies. However I'm even more interested in watching if the players who are being noticed in camp can carry it to the game. I hope Jennings is healthy enough to go cause he's the one I really want to watch. I gotta hunch we see Hodge blow up some poor RB in the hole at least once. The one player who stood out the most in the family game was Culver. I am curious to see him in a game. I also expect to find out if Rodgers is our future QB. He has had enough time to learn and it's time to produce.

While most discount the importance of pre-season, I believe ours is of the utmost importance. We need to see that MM is moving us in the right direction. We need to see the young talent show improvment from week to week. Most importantly, winning is an attitude and it all starts Saturday night.

Other than Clifton, the starting line needs to play to the half. If Clifton is able to do it he should play 1 quarter or more. This line is new and in a new blocking scheme. They need the game time work to get down timing. They will need to get it sorted out quickly because the bears are a month away. Brett should play until the coach is satisfied, not just one series or two. Depending on what he does in that series should decide wether he needs to sit or not. The second & third quarters Rodgers should play and let Martin & Wroebel split the 4th.

My biggest concern is the OL, it needs to jell and you can't do that sitting the pine. They should play at least 1 half for games 1 & 2, 3/4s of game 3 & 4.
The bears are going to be a hard nut to crack and they will need to work together as much as possible. If they don't get it together it will be a disappointing first game

I agree, if the starting o-line could play the whole game I'd be all for it. Plus it's not not like we have much depth anyways.

Exactly. Use Favre and company till half time and don't repeat what we saw last season in TC.

That was stupid - stupid, really really stupid, to not allow the best Offense to jell. We were terribly ill prepared for "the Lions" last year. We can't afford the same against " the Bears " this season.

That was as obvious, as a snap up the side of the head to me. We don't need to see anything but the #1 and #2 Offences and QB's Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Let's get to REAL - FAST.

I want to see the state of OUR ST's. Where are we there on Saturday? Do we need more help? Not being able to catch punts in August, is a real bitch, unbelievable to me. How's OUR punting game in a real game situation?

I want to see who's the #2 TE? Is it worth it to continue with the David Martin project or move on? Will Donald Lee start to catch the ball with some consistency?

Who's the man at RB with Green coming off a very serious leg injury ? Gado or Herron?

Is CB Charles Woodson all he's cranked himself up to be? Is Ahmad Carroll off with the grabby hands? Believe in your speed Ahmad.

Does OUR DL have a push in the middle, and can OUR LBer's sneak into the oppositions backfield?

These are some of the things that interest me and that I want to see a focus on.

          One last thing:

Do we have some imagination back on Offense and Defense?

On Offense. The plan is of course, to run - run - run the ball, but do we have any real playmakers beyond Donald Driver and Greg Jennings who is all that - as I see it. If any of Gardner,Ferguson and Boerigter can't get on with the attitude to play hard. Get rid of the worst two of them and go with WR's that will try and have desire to improve.

Most teams pull their starters especially their QBs early in the second quarter if not before during the beginning of preseason. I see it a couple of different ways. Play them a ton early and then pull them back, instead of risking injury closer to the regular season. The other way I see it is start short and finish long to get better prepared for the regular season.

This offense is going to need more snaps in preseason than that of a veteran offense that has gelled under one system for several years, but to go overboard with plays this early is a bit silly considering the Chargers like to get to the passer in their 3-4 defense and that our offensive line is a bit raw. I don't want to sacrifice Favre quite yet.

I would agree Brett should get more playing time but not yet. Gotta give that line time to learn. 1 or 2 series is enough for me this early. Give him a half next week, and then 3 quarters each in thelast 2 games.

                I do see your stance.

Yet ! There's nothing to prepare readiness better than playing.

An NHL coach doesn't rest his best during a hockey game, or a baseball GM in a baseball game, or a soccer coach in a soccer game.

Players that get injured are usually not in game shape - ie Javon Walker, Ahman Green and Bubba Franks last year. Backup players suddenly don't develop wings in exhibition games, and still the Coach's have to see younger less NFL ready players in Pre Season games to assist them in making final decisions. It's one of those tough calls, I believe.

I really feel that. You only get there (ready to make plays) by playing not riding the pine.

We were very much lacking in preperation in 2005. We all saw just that.

I'm going to watch these few things.

                  1.Hawk
                  2.Picket and Allen
                  3.Hodge
4.FB Cooper thought he showed he can catch out of the backfield in the Scrimmage need to see him blocking now. Think he is battling Leach and Davenport for FB
                  5.Woodson
6.Kicking game.... I think the Packers would kick atleast 4 field goals.
                  7.Punting game

Main two guys I will be looking at are Jennings and Gardner.

I will be looking at the running game and the CBs. Other than that maybe the special teams...

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN SAN DIEGO:

BLACK'S BEACH- Miramar Road West to the T intersection at Torrey Pines Park go right for a few hundred feet look for hang gliders near top of the trail down the cliff.
Best Nude beach in America and a great place to sleep off a hangover.

Since you are near La Jolla(Hoya for Midwestern types) eat cheap at Der Weinersnitzel. Yes it's fast food but it overlooks the Ferarri dealership in La Jolla. Enjoy the cars.

PACER'S- a couple of blocks west of South Rosecrans off I-8(you'll see the all nude club Les Girls from freeway for the exit) a very nice friendly strip club better than Dirty Dan's near the airport.

Gas Lamp District- Downtown. Become a connoisseur of fish tacos at Pacific Fish Company. The Gas Lamp Strip Club is really a Steak House where you pay to grill it yourself. Dick's Last Resort on Fourth Street(Watch patrons donate Bras to collection at the bar. Fish Taco's are good everywhere. Parking costs you.

Silver Strand- Take the Coronado Bridge to Coronado and head south to the thin strip of land between the bay and the ocean. Miles of straight road with nothing on it. See how fast your rental car can go. Turn around at Imperial Beach and do it again only faster. If it is after hours there is a famous bar in Imperial Beach that opens at 6 am. I never remember the name but you can't miss it.

Hotel Circle- Between the stadium to the east and past Fashion Valley Shopping Center to the West on both side of I-8 are plenty of Hotels, Restaurants and Bars. Halter tops and shorts abound and will clue you in on the next place to stop. Drive around and stop somewhere 3 blocks at a time. Junior Seau's place is there.

                      THINGS NOT TO SEE

Del Mar Racetrack- Too far North and betting on horses is for old geezers.

Tijuana- There is nothing to but chase under 21 San Diego State co-eds, buy but pure ethanol and if you're an old geezer Viagra. You'll get ripped off on fake Cuban cigars and jewelry.

                      Sea World- It's tourist season.

The key things I want to see is:

1.) How the running game will work with the zone blocking scheme.

                              2.) Can our d-line start to form a pass-rush?

3.) See how Hodge advances. I do like Barnett, but if Hodge can improve his pass coverage, MM may be forced to move Hodge to MLB.
