  • Packerrats group project: Top 100 NFL Players

I thought this project probably needed its own thread to get organized.

The idea is to create a page here on Packerrats that will display two random player images out of a database and allow the user to choose between those players. The result of that choice will be processed by a script containing an Elo rating formula. More on the formula here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system

The formula will be used to apply ratings to each player in the database such that the players with the top 100 ratings in that database can be displayed. Essentially we are breaking up the task of rating hundreds of unalike players into thousands of simple tasks of rating two players at a time.

The scripts for this project are already complete with perhaps just a little fine-tuning and styling left on my part. A demo of this concept using only NFL quarterbacks is already implemented on another site.

Now as a community we have this to do list to get this project done:

    1) Decide exactly what to tell users to make their choices based on which will determine the Top 100.

    2) Compile a list of players for the database. We don't need or want every NFL player in there, just ones with an outside shot of making the Top 100. The number of players in the database will probably end up being a few hundred. I have no ideas on how to decide this list and my only suggestion is a series of threads with polls maybe.

    3) The biggest of all... we need images for each of these players. To make this easier I have written a bash script that will resize, compress, and convert all images at once. We need non-boring images of each player, in the same aspect ratio, with the files all named after the player they are of.

Let me know if I overlooked something.

    What aspect ratio?

Doesn't matter as long as they are all the same. Right now I'm using a 3x2 aspect ratio.

This is tough. I thought the NFL Network did a poor job with theirs and they have a lot more money and access than Packer Rats.

I would like to see a top ten by position, do that first. Then work from their.

Let's also assume you want stills of at least decent quality. I'm thinking you don't want screen shots off of youtube?

I'd suggest that we have more imagination. Lack of money will do that for you.

Pro Football Reference has a metric that rates players across positions called Approximate Value. Here is the link for Approx Value for 2010. You can collect as many players as you wish off this list. There will be debate near the cutoff line and for this injured during 2010, but this list should be a good starting point.

This query only considers 2010. If you widen the years considered, it will look different obviously. If injury concerns us, then we could expand to look at two or three years, do the query and collect the names. Then we can divide them by position for everyone to look at.

                2008-10: http://pfref.com/tiny/EqV97

                Average value defined.

Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Well needing this many images our options are limited and its probably going to resort to a team of rats hunting down what we need one by one. youtube is an interesting idea, the images probably wouldn't look too bad if they were resized to have a smaller resolution than the video had. I can't think of a way that this isn't more work than using the advanced options on good old google/images

This is a good find. I just opened the list and went a few pages deep to see if any of the players around the 300 mark would have a shot at the top 100. Larry Fitzgerald was 294. That makes me wonder how far we'd have to go!

Perhaps the best would be to ask the fans of other teams to rank the top dozen players or so from their team. For the Packers this would put guys in that AJ Hawk, Ryan Grant range in the mix. For other teams I imagine the 13th and 14th best players have even less of a shot at the top 100.

I think the 2 year mix might be the best. Rookies from 2010 would have a shot but injuries or team decimation (Fitzgerald) would be given a chance.

Fitz is 169 in the two year spread.

I know there is a lot of news right now but I'm still a little surprised that this thread got paged. Are people interested in this idea? I thought it would bring a lot of new traffic to the site.

I will furnish one. However, the current query doesn't return position, so sorting will be difficult.

I am going to contact profootballreference and see if there is a way to get the 2 year list with positions.

Is there anywhere simple we have to store the file, or do we just want to post it?
