Likely waiting for Joe or his wife to get to the cop shop and identify the body. I can't imagine what that trip is like.

Could be. We spent most of our childhood on frozen Lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. i wonder if kids are doing it now bc they really haven't done it before and don't know the danger spots, currents, etc.

Man, this is gonna be the longest week of Philbin's life, eh?

Alcohol and water freely mix, but people on alcohol + water = Darwin award.

Just speculating on the Alcohol, but would anyone here bet against that speculation?

              Oh wow. That sucks. Royally.

It's really a dangerous year. A car went through the ice on the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir near Mosinee yesterday with 1 person drowning. http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/art...text|FRONTPAGE

                    Horrible.

Unfortunately, at 21, the boy falls in "the demographic"; 17-27 year-old males disproportionately represented in accidental deaths.

                    Sad.

Wow...bad week to be an assistant coach in the NFL. That Steeler coach got badly burned in a house fire, now this?!?

So sorry to hear about this. Alcohol makes you do incredibly stupid things, and unfortunately some can get you killed. My prayers and thoughts are with the Philbin family at this terrible time.

I think if you grew up near water in the winter, then the chances of something like this happening dramatically decrease as you get older. Add alcohol and the odds go back up. But if you are in college and have not spent time around a frozen lake or river, then you have no idea how dangerous it can be. Add alcohol then and its sad but almost predictable.

The freezing water is enough to do you in, but esp. on a river with a current its a death trap.

Its terrible news no matter the cause and my heart goes out to the family.

As a parent, I couldn't think of anything worse than having to bury a child. My Grandma buried her 50 year old son. She cried like she was burying a little boy.

Coach and his wife have 5 sons and a daughter. Now, they lost a son. Losing a sibling must also be extremely traumatic.

The sheer number of the clan fosters the idea that there'll be a great support network up and running, coupled with the fact that the Packers are a first class organisation, I am encouraged to believe the Philbins will be taken care of as best possible.

Family and friends will help them negotiate these stormy waters. Nobody can ask for more than that.

My parents had 5 sons and a daughter as well. We have come close to losing #3. I can't imagine if it ever actually happened. Probably true about family and friends. I just hope the rest of the world leaves them alone and allows them to grieve in peace.
