  • Warren Sapp/NFL Network: It is when it is (except when it isn't)

Okay, so Sapp tweeted that Jeremy Shockey was the informant to the league offices.

The NFL Network decided Sapp "would not be fired."

Sapp was reminded he is an analyst, not a reporter. So he cannot report.

Except that he tweeted this info on his personal account.

    And Sapp's a contracted employee.

But his employer is also Shockey's employer, so Sapp could have put the NFL at risk for whistleblower laws if Shockey gets any extra "retribution" on the field or lockerroom.

Except that the NFL treats the NFL Network like an independent organization, not the in-house Pravda arm. They even say so.

So, a non-employee was disciplined for news he tweeted on his personal account that would violate federal laws if the NFL weren't so upstanding and trustworthy in its organization.
I believe in God, family, Baylor University, and the Green Bay Packers.

This Sapp situation requires Skinbasket's delicate touch in order to fully express how much Sapp and Shockey can bite bad things, suffer impalements, and swallow icky stuff for all we care.

just another sapp cheap-shot. how can shockey even defend himself? he can only deny it. what good will that do? it's out there now. even if an nfl executive said he didn't do it no one would believe it. very reckless. shockey ought to sue him (if he's innocent).

I don't like either of them so I say they should settle this with a chainsaw fight!

This thing is a big deal to me. I can't tell from the piece if Sapp was punished but if I were Shockey I would do my best to make sure he is.

              Two reasons:

              1. Shockey is looking for job. Being falsely accused so openly on the NFL Network can only hurt his chances. That's close to taking money out of his pocket.

              2. Worse for me, is the whole "snitching" deal. Being labeled a "snitch" is a death sentence in some neighborhoods in America. Horrible crimes go unsolved and unpunished because only a "snitch" would cooperate with the police. When someone does get arrested and punished, people blame the snitch and not the original criminal.

Sapp has a big mouth, obviously, but even he is crossing a line when he labels someone a "snitch" because he knows how many Blacks interpret that word. It's the worse thing a person can be called. He's playing with fire due to the racial element here. He says that his "source" is reliable, well, is his source a former black teammate of Shockey? Who's to say that his source is not a racist throwing down on Shockey because he doesn't like him? Is it just coincidence that Shockey is white and labeled a "snitch" because he didn't experience the negative peer pressure of the anti-snitching code. Sapp's source needs to be identified and questioned.

Twitter or on the air, Sapp as a public figure is responsible for what he communicates. I think Shockey's reputation and career is close to be seriously damaged and if I were him I would seriously consider taking up the offers pouring in from lawyers who are urging him to take legal action against the 'QBKILLA' (and cheapshot artist) and the NFL Network.

I think the NFL has underplayed it, they should just come out and clear him if they can since Sapp, whether through official channels or not (or as a reporter or not) has already published the report. HBO would be another entity that might like this resolved.

But I am not sure Shockey qualifies for whistleblower status. Certainly not if he wasn't a source.
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

Saints' Bounty-Gate Punishment: Too Harsh? Too Soft? Or Just Right?

                      By Josh Zerkle
(NFL Lead Writer) on March 23, 2012

The NFL has finished the bulk of their investigation into the so-called "bounty scandal," as signaled by Roger Goodell's dropping the hammer on the New Orleans Saints.
Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for the entire 2012 season, team GM Mickey Loomis will sit out the first eight games, and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has been suspended indefinitely.
But Goodell didn't stop there: He also fined the New Orleans Saints $500,000 and took away their second-round draft picks for this year and next year.
But did the punishment fit the crime? Was this even a crime, in your eyes?
And that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
Dan and I discuss the motives of Roger Goodell and what he hoped to achieve with this punishment. Is the bounty culture finally dead in pro football?

Sean Payton: Embattled Saints Coach Releases Statement on Bounty Punishment

                      Chris Graythen/Getty Images
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke for the first time on Friday after being suspended for one year by the NFL.
                      Payton said, via ESPN:
I share and fully support the league’s concerns and goals on player safety. It is and should be paramount. Respecting our great game and the NFL shield is extremely important to me. Our organization will implement all necessary protections and protocols and I will be more vigilant going forward. I am sorry for what happened and, as head coach, take full responsibility. Finally I want to thank (Saints owner Tom Benson), our players and all Saints fans for their overwhelming support.
The Saints allegedly had a bounty program for injuring opponents while Payton was in charge for three years. While it was former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who orchestrated the program, Payton was aware and did nothing.
Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted on Wednesday:
Sean Payton suspended one year. Mickey Loomis 8 game and $500,000 fine. Saints fined $500,000 and a second round pick in 2012 and (2013).
                      — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 21, 2012
The news has undoubtedly hurt the Saints organization and those associated with it. Williams has been suspended indefinitely and Payton's legacy, if not job, has been threatened. The Saints have yet to announce what they will do about the coaching staff.
For an organization just two years removed from a championship, everything has been turned on its head. It doesn't help that the scandal reportedly happened from 2009 to 2011 and the Saints won the Super Bowl in 2010.
Payton's statement on Friday was very formulaic, but he will undoubtedly be asked plenty of questions by the media if he attends next week's NFL meetings. It's quite possible that commissioner Roger Goodell orders Payton to the media session on Wednesday to further explain himself.

I just noticed this post as it landed on the thread, and it shouldn't be here. Somehow I failed to delete it outright and that revision option timed out I think. I cannot 'otherwise' explain it's content in terms of duplication of the original from which I 'only' desired the LINK and Title's.

I'll attempt to revise the post as a precaution against Copywrite Law. This post and the one that prompted this concern should be deleted from this thread if possible to clear any problem.

OK. I've managed to get the post to where I hope it's acceptable; not any Copywrite Violation or being accused of plageruiization.

Is it possible to remove the post (three above this post) and also this post ? Thanks.
