Obviously, a seasoned pro (as you put it) wouldn't know that he shouldn't have missed the kick without a HC chewing him out.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostI know you're being sarcastic, but McCarthy has got to chew out his players once in while. Let them know mistakes are unacceptable and a player has to do his job. Crosby is a seasoned pro; he has to make his kicks, especially the 39 yarder that wouldve tied the game. .
If that is your analysis, I will keep MM just as he is. I would take Walsh over either of the other two.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostIts clear McCarthy is no disciplinarian like Coughlin. He's more of a strategist like Bill Walsh was. Holmgren was a little bit of both. The Walrus grabbed Billy Schroeder's face mask for all to see and he would've put James Jones in a doghouse for fumbling twice in a game as a rookie if he were coaching Jones.

Maybe Crosby never learned from his mistakes b/c McCarthy has never chewed him out? Hell, this season is something like the 7th or 8th season of McCarthy's regime and the Packers still have pad level issues.Originally posted by Patler View PostObviously, a seasoned pro (as you put it) wouldn't know that he shouldn't have missed the kick without a HC chewing him out.

I'd take a disciplinarian-strategist hybrid like Holmgren or Billichick over McCarthy any day.

Greg Jennings might have just saved the Packers' season with his good-natured mobbing of Crosby. When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro ~Hunter S.

Mike McCarthy has chunks of boys like you in his stool, but he treats men like men.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostMaybe Crosby never learned from his mistakes b/c McCarthy has never chewed him out? Yet, you likened MM to Walsh, who I would take over Holmgren without even blinking. Belichik or Walsh? Sort of a toss up in my mind.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostI'd take a disciplinarian-strategist hybrid like Holmgren or Billichick over McCarthy any day.
all other things equal, I'll take the cooler, more calculated approach of MM over the more eruptive personality of Holmgren every time.

There's a good chance that M3 passes Holmy in the SB wins department when all is said and done. The Packers have a few good years coming yet.Originally posted by Patler View PostYet, you likened MM to Walsh, who I would take over Holmgren without even blinking. Belichik or Walsh? Crosby has the Packer record for consecutive successful fieldgoals at 23 in a row. The record before Crosby? 17. It's clear that Crosby doesn't know what it takes to be successful.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostMaybe Crosby never learned from his mistakes b/c McCarthy has never chewed him out? Crosby has a very strong leg. Recall that he was feet short on a 69 yard free kick attempt in Green Bay, in December, into the wind with the temperature about 30 degrees. Yet, he tends to be erratic on longer kicks, and gets into problems when he has too many attempts at 50+ in a short time. Distance wise, he is good anywhere at just about anytime from 60 yards in, but he doesn't kick a straight ball most of the time.

Ya, Holmgren was a good coach, but not one of the all time greats in my mind. A couple SB losses and a few seasons that fizzled out earlier than maybe they should have. MM's story is still being written, and I hope it includes a few more SBs.Originally posted by denverYooper View PostThere's a good chance that M3 passes Holmy in the SB wins department when all is said and done. Well, if you have a guy who is struggling to produce due to a lack of confidence in his technique, probably the best way to fix that is not to chew out that guy on the sideline. Since that's almost certainly not going to help.Originally posted by LegandofthePack15 View PostMcCarthy should've chewed him out. That miss was inexcusable. The Packers were lucky the Lions didnt score a td the last time they were in the redzone. Even luckier Crosby didnt have to kick the game-winner. Crosby sucks.
Tom Coughlin didn't win two SBs by encouraging his specialists after they made a bad play, especially a fucking inexcusable bad play. In fact, Coughlin almost cut his punter on the spot after the poor dude helped the Packers into the big dance by punting the ball to D-Jax instead of out of bounds as Coughlin had instructed.
Kickers are like golfers, a lot of their game is in their head, and the only real reason to chew out your struggling kicker from the HC perspective is if you've already decided you're going to cut him. If you want to salvage the person and the player, you have to be largely supportive.</delurk>

Getting back to that original thread topic, the media is all over the Leos today. The Packers were there, ripe for the picking, having played a lousy game on offense and having a run defense that was slipping in the second half. Yet the Lions found a way to lose.Originally posted by pbmax View PostJSO has Scott Linehan (OC) and Shawn Jefferson (WR coach and former FF tease) getting into sideline confrontation. Missed that during the game.
The Detroit News summed it all up when they contrasted Jimmy Schvantz's quote about not doing enough to win with Aaron Rodgers's quote about not playing well but doing enough to win in the end.
The difference between good and average teams is very, very slim in the NFL.
The fans here are furious. Same old Lions, etc., etc."The Devine era is actually worse than you remember if you go back and look at it."
