THe only reason I can think of, is that he firgured San fran would go for it on 4th down. I would if I were the 49ers. They have owned the LOS. I actually didn't think it was that bad of a call...back them up a bit, make them work for it.

I would have declined the penalty, but I'm sure McCarthy thought the 49ers would go for it. Let's be real, what are our odds of stopping them on 4th and 1 if they decide to go for it. Of course, seeing that it was a full yard, I would have declined the penalty, but I'm not sure what kind of view McCarthy had. Initially, it looked like it would be just short of the first down.
