  • You don't get a shot at the guys that are freak athletes and already great football when are usually drafting in the second half of the first round. Given his ability to find good quality later in the draft, maybe the thought is to swing for the fences early?

    • Yeah, I think it's a "we trust our coaching staff, let's get the best athletes we can find and coach them into players."
It's a Ron Wolf/Al Davis thing really, GB has been doing this for decades.

Agree you usually are finding the combo of best athlete + good player in the top half of R1. Sometimes there's a late bloomer or someone with a red flag that gets by, but the scouting is so good these days it's hard to miss guys.

I didn't like that Gary pick because I thought he was too much of a boom or bust player, and that's not my personal preference. He's turned out fine. Gute has certainly had his share of bad picks in R1, though I can't fault the thinking and taking big swings, especially if you're drafting in the back of the round.
I actually like the "good football player" better, especially in the later rounds. Xavier McKinney isn't a great athlete (by NFL standards) but he's got great football IQ and instincts. That can make up for a lot. Wouldn't want a team of Ladarius Gunters though - most draft picks are coin flips and you need good athletes to compete.

That's part of what made the Amari Rodgers pick so confounding, when Nico Collins (the type of size/speed prospect they usually like) was there. I think the R3 curse has been discussed ad nauseum, and appears to thankfully be broken.

What if you could replace each of those blown picks with the "consensus" better player. We might just have the best roster in football. Savage was the worst of the picks in my book, Quay a close 2nd. McGinn has Savage as the 6th best safety in that draft. There are at least 3 guys picked after him that are better. Myers over Humphry sent Red into a 5 day bender (in fairness he was 2 days into it when the pick occurred).

Only way to sign him is to a minimum deal with a bonus for playing half the snaps in each game. For him $1 million for each game he plays half the snaps would seem reasonable. He simply can't fuck them over on a deal like that, but I find it unlikely he would sign that.

              • No to Bakhtiari. I think his time is past. Agree only way would be to offer minimum salary with per game roster bonuses or some such

At this point I think Davis Bahhtiari should pay the Packers for the privilige of returning to the team to attempt earning some playing time. The Packers paid him WAY too much already.

                    • The Athletic's Diana Russini reported Saturday, citing sources, that is is "increasingly likely" that Rodgers could be placed on injured reserve or benched over the next few weeks. Russini also reported that sources around the NFL wouldn't be surprised if Rodgers is cut at some point during the regular season.

That news arrives a few days after it was reported that Jets owner Woody Johnson talked with coaches about benching Rodgers as early as Week 4 this season.
                      ...
According to Russini, Rodgers's intent remains to play in 2025—but not for the Jets.

There is potential but he might prefer the weather in Santa Clara, CA.

Too bad he can’t be traded there today.

49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was active for Thursday night’s game against the Rams but never got on the field. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that was because Campbell quit on the team and refused to play.

He had a hissy fit because he lost his starting job to a better player returning from injury. Can SF suspend him without pay for the rest of the season? Otherwise, even the other SF players think he should be cut.

"Following the final whistle, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that linebacker De'Vondre Campbell informed coaches he "didn't want to play today," and left for the locker room in the third quarter when asked to replace Dre Greenlaw on the field. "

                              • "We're working through the semantics of exactly how to deal with it," Shanahan said. "But I mean you guys heard from me last night, you guys heard from our players, his actions from the game, it's not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still get to be a part of our team. We're working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we'll handle the situation appropriately."

The most obvious move would be to outright release Campbell, making him an unrestricted free agent and free to sign with another team immediately. There are, however, other options the Niners can explore, such as a suspension without pay for conduct detrimental to the team.
