  • With the current Packer WRs, MVS would likely be the highest paid player in the room.

If you ask why they left THEN, you also have to ask why they are being let go NOW. KC and now BUF have cut MVS, he's on the back end of his career. Runyan will be fine and isn't leaving NYG for a couple of years. Welch isn't displacing Hopper or Wilson.

They might be cheap players, but that doesn't mean they are (still) good players. Has to be a good reason to swap for a younger player on the roster who might have upside, AND knows the playbook, their role on the field and place in the locker room. (and probably has the trust of coaches)
Stupid minor point: if you're on the roster Week1 your salary is on the books, so if you are churning players after that you are just slowly chewing into your cap space. It might only be a million or two, but you might want that million to roll over next year. Lots of things to consider.

I post to this because I think it's fun to see what these players are up to, not because I want them back.
If he'd cost very much, forget it. But probably he'd be cheap even as a vested veteran. He's only 30 yrs. old and I don't recall any injury bad enough to permanently slow him down. Speed usually persists pretty well. I remember seeing a video of Jesse Owens running a 9.4 hundred (yds, not meters) at age 57. Who would he replace? What's Wicks' status? IR or not? Heath or Melton (or MVS) could be PSed if nobody is on IR.

The Welch case would be better than the worst on the PS.

This is all speculative and probably won't happen, but IMO it certainly wouldn't be bad if it did.

If you pick him up, you are stuck with the balance of the contract he signed with Buffalo. The contract was $2.25M guaranteed plus incentives up to $4M on a one-year contract.

        • That doesn't sound all that expensive. It's likely all moot now, though, as the Packers picked up a WR named Malik Knowles of Kansas State to the Practice Squad.

Do not want MVS. Speed definitely diminishes with age and injuries, and MVS has had those. Also, they have Bo Melton who actually ran a faster 40 than MVS did and is younger and cheaper.

Knowles is a weird pickup - was a so-so receiver but really good kick returner. Doesn't have great burst according to scouts. It's a PS guy so I wouldn't make much of it. They have Julian Hicks on the PS already. I suspect they will shuffle thru those last 1-2 PS spots with players for a while.

            • No way to MVS. He will infect the youngsters with Dropsies. Worse than an STD and usually a career ending ailment.

Damn, they are going to use him vs the Chiefs? Seems like all of KCs games end on a last second score. This will be good.

Even better if he come to Lambeau vs the Pack in November.

Maybe, but either way he's just a kicker. They're a dime a dozen for a decent one IMO. In the slim chance he's the niners kicker next year, then they will have let a hoss of a kicker out the door that we would have a chance to sign. If he does kick well and is released (I think this is far more likely than the former), then Pack could resign him too.

This is all assuming the Niners do in fact have that kicker from Michigan who was a beast. I think they do.

I do disagree with your "dime a dozen" statement. If that were true, why have the Packers struggled with kickers for over a year, along with the Commandos and Gints and maybe a couple other teams?

                            • Jake Moody is hurt, their backup kicker hurt his shoulder making a tackle, so they brought Anders in and ... he missed an XP vs. KC. At least he's consistent with missing one a game.

NFL-quality Kickers are not easy to find, but they should be. There was an article on the acmepacking site a while back that (half-jokingly, I assumed) talked about how baseball teams have "pitching labs" and NFL teams could easily do the same with kicking labs. I suspect you could take many a decent soccer player and turn them into an above average NFL kicker.

I'm not sure about that. I've seen several comments from soccer players turned football kickers who said it is much more difficult kicking a football because of its peculiar shape and flight characteristics.
