Guter has remade a few positions the last few years. For the better.
Now, if he’d have drafted better in the first place . . .
His first 3 drafts didn't produce a lot outside of Alexander, Gary and Love. Buit his 2022-2024 drafts have been nothing short of great, producing Quay Walker, Devonte Wyatt, Christian Watson, Sean Rhyan, Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Kingsley Anagbare, Rasheed Walker, Lukas Van Ness, Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kraft, Colby Wooden, Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Brooks, Carrington Valentine, Jordan Morgan, Edgerrin Cooper, Javon Bullard and Evan Williams. Those drafts, in my opinion, made the Parsons trade possible because Gute had drafted so many good players that he felt he could afford to trade away 2 1st round picks, which in the past would have been considered anathema in Green Bay.

I was thinking about this recently. Guter's first few drafts really were not good, and the team relied on Ted's roster picks for most of its success - it was Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, Kenny Clark, and so on, who still drove most of the success. But yes, he has done much, much better the last few years. Some of his picks - Sean Rhyan, Quay Walker, Jordan Morgan (maybe) - have been a little slow to develop, but they have developed. So yes, Guter's drafts have been much better. My comment was bent toward the Darnell Savage pick, which was a poor one, as he had to give away draft capital to move up and get a guy who was, in the end, a dud. So he had to remake that room.

But by paying Parsons we are going to need some good picks going forward when we lose Doubs, Rhyan, Enagbare, Walker, Reed. Or maybe its a different subset of the guys you listed. We are going to bleed talent the next couple years.

That's the way it is when you build a good team. Eventually you have to pay the top players or lose them. The plus side is that if the Packers win the SB, the contracts they will get from other teams will be that much higher, increasing the comp picks the Packers get. The Packers will need the comp picks and shrewd drafting to replenish the decent players while they pay the stars.
Everybody we really need to keep, we will keep. That's the way good teams do it - none of this silly rebuilding shit.
Need, yes. But there are going to be some that they'd like to keep, but can't because of the money it would take vs the cap situation. That's not a rebuild, but can cause a bit of a decline, depending on where the losses are, vs how good the replacements are.

Reminder the Savage pick was a bonus pick from the trade with NO. They moved down, then back up to draft Jaire, and were able to pick up a R1 which turned into Savage. Overall I'd say Gute won that trade (Marcus Davenport vs. Jaire).
Savage was beginning to show potential towards the end of his rookie season under Pettine, but Joe Barry came in and put in a defense that was not a great fit for Savage. Even so, he never lived up to the potential, like many draft picks.
Gute did have some whiffs (and still does). For fun go out to https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/ and look at various franchise draft histories for comparison. Gute holds up pretty well vs. a lot of other GMs out there.
Didn’t know where to post and didn’t want a new thread - but just read that Bill Ferrario passed away (47). He was a great Badger and drafted by the Packers but only played a couple seasons. One of my best friends was a lineman and played with him at UW.
That 99 Badger line with Chris McIntosh, Dave Costa, Bill Ferrario, Casey Rabach and Mark Tauscher / blocking for Ron Dayne. Man - what a year that was.
